Bodies of 2 Hispanic Males Found in Cook County

    Bodies found near Lemont

    November 16, 2007
    By Dan Rozek Chicago Sun-Times

The bodies of two men found Thursday morning on a bike path in the southwest corner of Cook County near Lemont had been wrapped in plastic and bedding, according to Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart.

Construction crews paving the asphalt bike path just west of Route 83 near the border of Cook and DuPage counties found the bodies at 7 a.m. The crews worked on the path - called the Centennial Trail - Wednesday, so the bodies were dumped there either Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, Dart said.

Police believe the two men had been beaten.

Their bodies, found lying side by side, were wrapped separately. Each was first wrapped in plastic garbage bags and packing tape and then in bedding, Dart said.

One body had "a considerable amount of blood" inside the wrappings, he said.

Officials said the men appeared to be Hispanic and about 6 feet tall, but their identities were unknown.

The cause of death will have to be determined during autopsies. Authorities removed the bodies this morning after first constructing a white tent over the spot where they were found.

The bodies were brought Thursday to the medical examiner's office, which is expected to conduct autopsies on the men this morning.

Cook County Sheriff's office and Forest Preserve police are investigating the case.

"Officials said the men appeared to be Hispanic and about 6 feet tall,"

Isn't this a little unusual for hispanics?

Men found near Lemont were strangled

    November 16, 2007
    STNG News Service
Two Hispanic men found lying side by side, wrapped in plastic and bed liners along a walking path near Lemont were strangled, authorities said today.

Jaime Cepeda, 34, and Edgar Mercado, 18, both of Chicago, were both strangled, the Cook County medical examiner's office said. Both deaths were ruled homicides, the medical examiner's office said.

The bodies were found at 7:30 a.m. Thursday near Illinois 83 and Jeans Road in an unincorporated area near Lemont, just inside the border of Cook and DuPage counties, Cook County sheriff's spokeswoman Penny Mateck said.

The bodies were discovered by construction workers going to work along a walking path under construction in the Centennial Trail Forest Preserve area, the sheriff's office said.

Early indications are the bodies were not there for very long, the sheriff's office said.

Sheriff's detectives are being assisted by evidence technicians and Forest Preserve police in the investigation.
