WASHINGTON -- Certain shipments of food from Mexico will no longer be allowed to come into the United States as health inspectors expand their search for the source of the salmonella outbreak.

Inspectors will focus on cilantro, several types of peppers -- including jalapenos and serranos -- scallions and bulb onions.

Shipments of the vegetables will head straight to a lab, where they will be tested for salmonella and E. coli.

The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention initially thought tomatoes were the only source of the outbreak.

Analysts predicted losses in the tomato industry have topped $100 million. See related story.

Since mid-April, there have been at least 943 reported cases of salmonella food poisoning.
