Children's Book About Same-Sex Penguin Couple Causes Flap in Virginia

LEESBURG, Va. — A children's book about two male penguins that hatch a chick together has been pulled from school library shelves in Loudoun County, Virginia.

Parents complained that the book has a gay agenda and have called for its removal. But supporters say the book's removal is censorship.

The decision by Superintendent Edgar Hatrick is being criticized by many parents and gay rights advocates. They say the school system shouldn't have allowed one complaint to limit children's literary choices.

The 2005 book is called "And Tango Makes Three." It draws on the real-life story of Roy and Silo, two chinstrap penguins at the Central Park Zoo in New York.

A spokesman for the Loudoun schools said Hatrick thought the book's content might not be developmentally appropriate for some students.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The award-winning children's book "And Tango Makes Three" is the focus of a controversy in Loudoun County Schools. SideBar

Ashburn, VA -- A children's book about penguins has been removed from general circulation in Loudoun County. Supporters of the book say the move accounts for censorship but critics call the book gay propaganda.

The book at the center of the controversy is the award-winning "And Tango Makes Three," a story about two male penguins who have to hatch and raise a chick together.

A parent at Loudoun's Sugarland Elementary School objected to the book. A district review committee and the school's principal did not find the book inappropriate, but Schools Superintendent Dr. Edgar B. Hatrick overruled them, taking the book out of circulation at 16 schools and putting it on a restricted list.

Unless one or both of the two gay penguins is an illegal alien this thread was off topic.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Richard, that is why its listed under "other news topics and issues".

IMO, it is totally inapropriate. Give me a break! Why should parents sit back and watch their children being taught that this garbage is normal? That is just one of the horrible things happening in America today that is bring down our "family values".

I believe this is appropriate; conservative values are being attacked on all fronts.

I believe that reason is to keep us preoccupied so that big business and government can twist and turn our own laws and values against we the People... they also want to do so without our oversight
