CNBC anchor implies US must support dictators to keep cheap oil flowing

CNBC contributor Erin Burnett said Friday that oil prices would skyrocket if countries in the Middle East broke out from under the rule of brutal dictators.
Appearing on a Friday broadcast of MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Burnett said that the ongoing revolution in Egypt could threaten US interests in the region due to Egypt's history as an ally on matters pertaining to Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan.
She added that as one of the most developed economies in the Middle East, it was surprising to see many of the society's wealthiest individuals supporting regime change. Tens of thousands of protesters across the country have taken to the streets the last few days, demanding President Mubarak resign.
"One more thing," Burnett remarked. "If this spreads, the United States could take a huge hit because democracy in a place like Saudi Arabia, you've talked about who might come in power, what that means for oil prices. They're going to go stratospheric."
"There's no doubt about it,' MSNBC host Joe Scarborough said. "No doubt about it!"
While the White House has been unusually quiet on the situation in Egypt, President Barack Obama said yesterday that Egypt's leaders must be more "responsive" to their people.
Vice President Joe Biden, during an appearance Thursday night on PBS, also claimed that President Mubarak was not a dictator and should not step down.
Mubarak has been in power for over three decades.

    So what

They would be doing the job that CAP n TRADE would do. Make (OIL) fossil fuels very expensive. Only if they do it they get the money instead of the CAP n TRADERs who came up with that scam.

Obama should be loving this as it would push the U S towards clean energy...Right?

    lol

The US has had the sole power for many years to curb rising oil prices. We ourselves have large reserves available and are the premier buyer at these massive rates. Yet if we started producing our own oil especially if ran as a government business to fund the government and reduce cost of oil in the US we'd be in better shape. However we'd need to make sure that oil isn't just grabbed up by foreign interests and keep it as an American product which sadly would mean a new government agency that would manage and finance it all for the interests of the people.

Some say China has the ultimate power right now as the main buyer. However thats not very accurate as they do produce some of their own and have many deals with Venzeula exchanging food and such for dirt cheap oil. Hence they aren't buying as much at the extreme high rates.

Since Carter, and every President since then, I have heard about the U.S. moving towards energy independence. Now I am sure glad we are so energy independent.

It seems that true energy independence does not lend itself to market manipulation and aid in inflationary adjustments to the economy.

If Americans want jobs and cheap and clean energy, we should be demanding 100 new nuclear plants around the country. Then we could have cheap energy and clean manufacturing.
