CNN column says president should go 'gangsta'

Editorials on two news sites popular with a liberal audience have begun calling for violence, at least rhetorically, against the Republican Party, which although in the minority in Congress has derailed some of the president's major agenda items.

The calls from a CNN editorial and Huffington Post piece were highlighted on the BigGovernment.com website.

Kristinn Taylor wrote at BigGovernment.com that the two news outlets "would be well-advised to retract the calls to violence and issue apologies to Republicans before Obama supporters are incited by their violent rhetoric and start going gangsta and break kneecaps of Republicans."

CNN Political Analyst Roland Martin suggested in a commentary that Obama begin using the power he has to pursue his agenda, citing the president's recent "suggestion" that he would make recess appointments if there wasn't action to approve some of his nominees.

"This is where the president needs to show his toughness and just do it. Forget the threats. The actions of Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Alabama, and other Republican obstructionists will continue if President Obama allows them to run roughshod over him. When you're the top dog, you do what you have to do to govern. Allowing Republican senators to continue to deny your appointments is nonsense," Martin wrote.

"This president got rolled by the Senate over health care. His team made some boneheaded mistakes, and now they are paying for them. Continuing to play footsie with opponents will only get him into more trouble. He should set a deadline to have his folks confirmed. If not, appoint them all during the recess and go on about your business," he continued.

"Obama's critics keep blasting him for Chicago-style politics. So, fine. Channel your inner Al Capone and go gangsta against your foes. Let 'em know that if they aren't with you, they are against you, and will pay the price," he wrote.

Shortly after, a column by David Bourgeois at Huffington Post continued the theme that Obama no longer should be "desperately attempting to win over the hearts and minds of the Republican establishment."

"Obama's entire first year in office can be summed up this way: pandering, placating, and pussy-footing around the Republican Party. He offered his hand to the Republicans, and they gave him a firm backhand," Bourgeois wrote.

His advice to the president then, he wrote, would be, "You've given it your best shot, you've tried numerous times to talk with the Republicans, to negotiate, to meet them halfway on every single matter before the American people. But they hate you for many reasons. It's time you break kneecaps. It's time to destroy the Republican Party. They don't deserve a seat at the table when all they want to do is score political points by being the Party of No."

The bold-faced reference to "break kneecaps" is in the original.

Bourgeois then continued with an update condemning criticism of his words.

"The right-wing media is now attacking me for supposedly inciting violence. A laughable charge. Only dimwitted people would arrive at that conclusion after reading my post. Clearly, conservatives don't know what a metaphor is. Of course I'm not advocating violence. If I had said the Democrats need to play hardball against Republicans, would they have said I advocated violence by use of baseballs?"

Taylor's Big Government report noted that Huffington Post publisher Arianna Huffington in a recent discussion chastised Fox News chief Roger Ailes for the rhetoric of Fox News personality Glenn Beck, a harsh critic of Obama.

On the Big Government forum page, there were defenders for CNN and Huffington Post:

"It was a metaphor … very much like we see on this list everyday and not news … political hyperbole," said one.

Said another, "This whole rhetoric thing is like a dog chasing cars. It covers a lot of ground … makes a lot of noise … but, ultimately, doesn't last very long."

But some said the underlying meanings were alarming.

"You'd really have to be obtuse if you don't know the history of the socialist and progressive movements in this country and not realize that they very much engaged in violence," said one participant.

Another said "liberal socialists are already violent and dangerous."

"Yes, its (sic) just a metaphor … like 'choice' is a warm and fuzzy lefty metaphor for infanticide," said another of the hundreds who chimed in.

That's pretty amazing! Is Martin suggesting violence? Looks like Nappy better include left-wing groups to the DHS list!

    Gee, I don't know..hmmm...

A priest/preacher/pastor can be tried under hate crime laws if someone in his congregation takes his "metaphor" literally and commits a violent act; but it's only a "metaphor" when a liberal incites violence?
