I agree with tenc57 and gofer. The drinking age is fine where it's at. It is a fact that the raised drinking age has reduced highway deaths. The side benefit is that fewer parents are losing their children.

I know some 40 year olds who are not mature enough to handle alcohol! Not sure these is much of a distinction between an 18 year old and a 21 year old, atleast in the form of maturity. But I could be wrong as I have no kids and am speaking based upon personal experience.

Alcohol can be a very dangerous drug in the hands of anyone who is not mature enough to handle it, irrespective of age...

Alcohol will destroy your life if your 15 or 105! It doesn't care how old you are and neither does any person who drinks it!

Moderation is the key! Not laws, kids will drink anyway law or not!

If they lower the drinking age to 18, EVERY HIGH SCHOOL will be reporting DUI's, car crashes, disorderly conduct charges, drunk drivers killing innocent victims, and on and on.

18yr olds are too inexperienced to handle a castratophe if something terrible happens due to alcohol. IMO, keep the age at a respectable 21.

I agree, if you're old enough to die for your country, you should be old enough to drink. However, we could raise the age of enlistment to 21 ? Put the 18 - 20 years olds into a national "service" corp.
Wonderful idea, magyart. These kids could be spending their time off from bars working some of those jobs Americans won't do (ergo we need to be swarmed by illegals) or supporting our Border Patrol. These kids have to start realizing that their chances of earning some money while in college are getting very, very slim, as illegals are doing the jobs that college kids would love for a little extra money for the beer and pizza.

The drug cartels are in the schools!

You wouldn't believe some stories about what is happening in schools before children reach 18 years old.

It is not the same schools of 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago.

    Very dangerous today, than yesteryears.

IMO SOMEONE WHO IS 18 IS OLD ENOUGH TO DRINK. MOST ARE RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH. MAYBE 18 YEAR OLDS COULD HAVE CONDITIONAL ACCESS. IN OTHER WORDS, THEY CAN DRINK AS LONG AS THEY DONT GET INTO TROUBLE OR MAKE TROUBLE WHEN THEY ARE DRINKING. IF THEY GET INTO TROUBLE THEN THEY WOULD BE BANNED FROM DRINKING TILL THEY ARE 21. HEY THIS WOULD NOT BE A BAD IDEA FOR EVERYONE.

    I AGREED .
THIS HIPOCRIT LAW OF 21, ONLY MAKE THEM BREAK THE LAW ONCE IT WAS IMPLEMENTED TOBE BROKEN.
IF A 19/20,, YEARS OLD WANT TO DRINK THEY WILL.
IT'S BETTER TO HAVE LAWS TO FOLLOW THEM, THEN TO HAVE LAWS JUST TO SHOW.

Study Says Drinking Age Has Saved Lives

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- A new study shows that laws making it harder for those under twenty-one to buy alcohol have significantly reduced drunk-driving deaths.
James C. Fell with the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation is lead author of the study, and he says national laws raising the legal drinking age to 21 have had an effect on alcohol-related traffic fatalities.

"There was a decrease of 11 percent that was associated with raising the drinking age to 21. That's a decrease in underage drinking drivers and fatal crashes during the time that the laws went into effect," said Fell.

Policies banning the purchase or possession of alcohol by people under 21 have been in effect nationally since 1988, and Fell says that things have changed significantly since 1982 when 5,000 young people ages 15-20 died in alcohol-related traffic crashes.

"Over the years, after the drinking age was raised, those numbers decreased by 60 percent. Now the alcohol related fatalities for 15-to-20-year olds is 2,220," said Fell.

The study controlled for factors such as auto safety improvements, and changes to the legal blood alcohol limit.
