College Students Want Nothing To Do With Government Jobs

February 8, 2012 by Sam Rolley

Government jobs do not look attractive to college students.

A new poll finds that just 6 percent of college students would be happy working for a government agency after graduating.
The Partnership for Public Service, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit, polled more than 35,000 students about their career aspirations. Most students said they were more interested in graduate school, non-profit work and employment in the private sector than government work.

This is the second year in a row that student interest in government work at the Federal, State or local level has dropped. Similar PPS polls in 2009 found that 10.2 percent and 2010 that 7.4 percent of college students were interested in government work.

The survey also asked students what was most important for their first job; job security came in second place, just behind “opportunities for personal growth.”

According to MSNBC, since April 2009, about 700,000 jobs have been cut from all levels of government as a result of massive deficits. The trend was only interrupted by a spike in Federal hiring for the 2010 Census. State and local governments saw the biggest numbers of layoffs.
