Conflicting reports about who shot Hasan at Fort Hood

06:14 PM

Did Police Sgt. Kimberly Munley shoot Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan last week at Fort Hood?

Army officials have credited the wounded 34-year-old officer from Killeen, Texas, with ending the rampage that left 13 dead and dozens injured. Yesterday she was interviewed by Oprah Winfrey.

But the officer who responded with her, Senior Sgt. Mark Todd, tells the New York Times that he shot Hasan after the gunman had seriously wounded Munley. An eyewitness has backed Todd's version of events.

Nearly a week after the shootings the Army has still not offered a complete report of what happened that day.

"How the authorities came to issue the original version of the story, which made Sergeant Munley a national hero for several days and obscured Sergeant Todd's role, remains unclear," the Times writes.

During the press conference today at which Army officials announced that Hasan would be charged with 13 counts of murder, a spokesman said Todd and Munley both "engaged the armed suspect."

"I would caution you from drawing final conclusions until all the evidence is analyzed," said Christopher Grey, a spokesman for Army Criminal Investigation Command.
