On Monday November 5th ABC News is teaming up with the American Red Cross for ABC's Day of Giving. It starts on Good Morning America and goes right through to Nightline to raise money for Hurricane Sandy disaster relief.

Red Cross volunteers from our area and across the country are already in disaster areas giving food, water, blankets, and other necessities to those who need help.

"It's the right thing to do is a cliché, but it just feels really good to help people out, people that are in need. It feels good to be able to be there, especially when disaster occurs," said Nikki Otto of the Cumberland Valley Red Cross.

You can participate in the Day of Giving by contributing to the Red Cross.

Your donation will help provide meals, shelter and hope to families who need it most.

You can send 10-dollars right now by texting 9-0-9-9-9. You can also donate online at redcross.org, or by calling 1-800-redcross.

Nothing like a nice hot shower…

    Fri, 2012-11-02 01:07 PM
County Executive Robert Astorino, of New York’s Westchester County, announced on November 2 that several local fitness centers have opened their facilities to accommodate those who need a place to take a warm shower.

Club Fit, New York Sports Club and Chappaqua Crossing are among those that have answered the call to participate in Operation Hot Shower, and others are being sought to help if they can.

“We know this has been a long week and that something as simple as a hot shower goes a long way,” Astorino said. “We are reaching out to area health clubs, colleges, universities and other sports and recreational facilities to answer the call and help out our neighbors in need.”

The announcement was made during a press conference at Club Fit of Briarcliff Manor, where owner David Swope and CEO Bill Beck said they were happy to be able to help the community.

“When we thought about how we could help our friends and neighbors, we realized a nice hot shower could help beat the chill of the past week,” Swope said. “It’s so basic, and yet so essential.”

To use any of these shower locations, management asks the public to please bring an ID and your own towels. It is recommended that you call in advance to make sure power and hot water are still available.

After Sandy, hot meals and help at Hoboken Elks Club

    By Molly Hennessy-Fiske November 5, 2012, 6:00 a.m.

HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The Hoboken Elks club has served 800 to 1,000 hot meals since the storm, and it saw steady traffic Sunday as more people sought a warm meal and place to eat it.

"It's getting better because the lights are coming on, but there's still not a lot of heat and hot water for people because there was flooding and the hot water heaters were trashed," said Eddie Madigan, 49, a cook at the Elks. "We anticipate more people coming out."

Madigan had no heat or hot water at his house, but that didn't seem to matter -- he had been volunteering at the Elks all week.

Late Sunday, Republican Gov. Chris Christie stopped by with Democratic Sens. Frank R. Lautenberg and Robert Mendenez. Madigan said they were concerned about how residents were coping with the loss of heat and housing.

"Those were concerns they were talking about -- temporary housing. People on public assistance and in million-dollar brownstones are in the same boat," he said. "

Mike Korman, 50, was out looking or food Sunday night after his refrigerator and dishwasher went out when he flipped the breaker at his house, which had flooded during the storm. He feels lucky compared to neighbors, whose homes completely flooded or burned in fires that have erupted as power came back on in flooded homes ill-equipped to handle it.

"I've seen people move out of town," said Korman, a musician who works for the city. "It's just a horrible situation -- and it's all across the region."
