CRPD threatens schools for those with Disabilities

Schools in Jacksonville are waiting with baited breath. They say a United Nations treaty threatens their existence.
The Illinois Schools for the Visually Impaired and Deaf, Garrison Alternative Center and Pathway School could all be affected. The treaty, which is called the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, calls for full inclusion. That means kids with disabilities would be placed in a regular classroom. Any specialized school would be in violation of the treaty if it passes the Senate as-is.
Jacksonville education advocates say they’re hoping the Senate will add in their definition of full inclusion. By doing that, it would keep the status quo and not change schools as we know them. That’s something they say needs to happen to keep specialized schools from closing.
“Many children with disabilities are perfectly fine in the regular, general ed classroom. Others need separate classes. Others need separate specialized schools. Some children have very complex disabilities and they need very complex and specialized teachers and schools,” said Lonnie Johns, a Jacksonville education advocate.
The treaty would also impact the Hope School in Springfield.
