ROSEMONT | 'Stand up and say who you are and be proud of it,' he tells packed house

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean told American Muslims gathered in Rosemont to think beyond voter registration drives.
"You need to run for political office," Dean said Saturday. "The only way you can achieve your goals is to stand up and say who you are and be proud of it."

Those in the packed house rose to their feet and applauded.

Dean was one of several prominent Democrats on Saturday to address the nation's largest gathering of American Muslims. Republicans declined invitations, organizers said.

The annual Labor Day weekend gathering of the Islamic Society of North America is expected to draw up to 40,000 Muslims before it ends Monday.

It's a family event full of spiritual and educational seminars. Saturday, many Muslims found inspiration from politicians.

"Be heard. Don't be silent. Tell it like it is," said Rep. Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress.

"If you don't tell your story, someone else will. And you may be the villain in their story," the Minnesota Democrat said.

Ellison, too, received a standing ovation.

While Muslims are changing America's religious landscape, they're being encouraged to find their political voice, too.

"There are people who want to see Muslims not only at the table but on the ticket," said Malik Mujahid, president of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago, which sponsored the "Take Back America Rally" involving Dean.

Nabeel Razzaki, a financial analyst from Portland, said many American Muslims became fearful of political participation after 9/11.

"I've thought about it for a long time, but I was scared," Razzaki said after hearing Dean. "Now, I feel inspired to run for a local office."

Muslims here say they share a common faith, but their religious and political views are hardly monolithic. Some want to concentrate only on local politics. By building slowly at the grass-roots level, the day will come when Muslims can influence the bigger races, they say.

But Omer Abid of west suburban Lyons said now, more than ever, Muslims need a voice in national politics.

"We can't sit back. We must speak up," Abid said. "The current president led America to war in Iraq, which was a huge disaster for the world. We can't stay silent."

I knew this man is an idiot but now he is advocating the destruction of a christian republic!

This man is nuts!!!!!!!

I always thought that Dean was okay for a Democrat. I always felt that he wasn't in the New World Order conspiracy circles.

But here he is falling for their goals.

New World is using Muslims all over the world to destroy Republics and force us into submission.

Maybe Dean is in the loop after all.


Oh, by the way, they are building the biggest Mosque in the US about 15 miles from me . I posted this a while back but here it is again in case someone wants to check it out.

It's at the corner of Highway 29 and Rockbridge Road in Lilburn GA. Guess the Lilburn mayor and city council approved the building????
It looks like something that you would see out of the encyclopedia pages. You can't just drive by and "see it'. You must pull over to get the full look.

Isn't this comforting? I don't think that there are a whole lot of muslims in this area, but they must be planning on a major influx to utilize this building. It really looks like a palace of some sort.

Local media will not even report it. It's as if it is going up in secret.

This is also happening in London. They are building the world's largest Mosque in London. It will be right across from the Olympic buildings when London hosts the Olympics in a few years. There is outrage to try and stop this as there are concerns about terrorism at the Olympics. People there are signing a petition and trying to fight it but we will have to see.

Allowing mosques to be built on our soil is our demise. The moslem belief is a MOVEMENT in religious clothing. A movement to moslemate everyone or slaughter them. We (many) have been brain-washed and the wolves are in the henhouse, the vultures are circling. Either we reclaim our republic now and stop all the pretense or we are doomed.

About 9 months ago, I sent an email to the mayor of Lilburn inquiring about the mosque. No answer back except for an invitation to their monthly city council meetings.

You can probably use GOOGLE EARTH to see how big the mosque is. I'm not very savvy with technology, but I'm sure that there is a way to see it on the net.

Mosques proved to be a perfect point for socialists to gain votes from Muslim community. As I see it, Muslims are far more capable to organize themselves and to vote for a candidate who promised the best bargain for them. And contrary to Latinos they have an agenda concerning your faith (or lack of it).

This is dangerous and just one more thing for us to watch out for!

To the poster who spoke about the mosque-here in northern Va. we have a private school that is for Middle Easern children and a friend of mine had to go there to give an estimate on repairing one of their vehicles, he said his car had to be stopped before getting inside and the guards searched under his car with mirrors on poles.

IJ, I think you are correct. My concern is that we are being pulled in different directions and when that is done it is easy for some people to slip things by while we're all distracted.
