Tuesday: Mexico City Family Erects Shrine To 'Narco Saint'

    POSTED: 8:09 am PST January 23, 2007

MEXICO CITY, Mexico -- A family in Mexico City has erected a shrine to a figure often called the "narco saint," who is revered by many of the nation's drug traffickers, according to NBC.

The fabled Jesus Malverde is a controversial figure.

Sam Quinones, of the Pacific News Service, reported that Mexican drug smuggling began in Sinaloa, where a "narcoculture" has existed for some time and Malverde is the religious side of that narcoculture.

According to Quinones, Malverde's most devout followers are among Sinaloa's poor and highland residents, the classes from which Mexico's drug traffickers emerged and as the narcos went from the hills to the front pages, they took Malverde with them.

According to the legend, Malverde was a bandit until he was hung in 1909.

Supporters say he robbed from the rich and gave to the poor. Critics say he is just a symbol for crime, NBC reported.

Many drug traffickers carry symbols of him and his image can often be found on prison cell walls, according to NBC.

The Mexico City housewife who set up the shrine says she put it up because of the things he did for poor people, NBC reported.

Malverde is not recognized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.

It is common in Mexico and other countries for the criminal element to pay off the poor. It buys them loyalty and assistance in their evil wrongdoings. Smart move...most people can't see past the dollar sign.

Doesn't Malverde mean "bad green"? That's how I would describe hush money...

I don't know, let me try it in a sentence. Some guy on another thread is talking out of his butt, perhaps I shall give him some malverde. Yeah, I don't think that is the same thing....I'll keep working on it.
