    Death blow to GMOs?

Death blow to GMOs? California ballot initiative calls for mandatory labeling of all genetically engineered foods

(NaturalNews) In what is perhaps the most significant breaking news we've heard on the GMO front in a long time, an effort has just been announced in California that seeks to gather enough signatures to put an historical initiative on the ballot which would require the labeling of GMOs in foods.

I interviewed Ronnie Cummins from the Organic Consumers Association (www.OrganicConsumers.org), who is a key leader in advocating mandatory GMO labeling. His organization is playing a significant role in helping to get this initiative on the ballot in California.

This is the pathway to victory against GMOs! With this initiative on the ballot, we have a very achievable strategy to deal a death blow to GMOs and restore sanity and integrity to our seeds and food crops.

Interview with Ronnie Cummins about GMO labeling ballot initiative in California by NaturalNews

Highlights from the announcement for mandatory GMO labeling
    • This labeling initiative is effectively a "ban" on GMOs, because most consumers simply won't buy genetically engineered ingredients once they know they are present in conventional foods.

    • GMOs are only continuing to be grown and sold today because consumers have been prevented from knowing about the GMO ingredients in their foods.

    • 75% of all non-organic processed foods in grocery stores today contain genetically engineered ingredients.

    • 90% - 95% of Americans want to know which foods contain GMOs.

    • The GMO industry is already gearing up to fight this ballot initiative and plans to spread lies about GMOs such as "GMOs are necessary to feed the world" or "genetically engineered crops are perfectly safe!" (The quack scientists who push GMOs are no doubt gearing up to spread their lies and disinformation as part of the effort to confuse consumers and thereby protect their GMO profits.)

    • This initiative, if approved, would force health food retailers like Whole Foods and Trader Joe's to reformulate their own products and inventory to remove GMOs. "There's gonna be panic in the boardrooms of Whole Foods and Trader Joe's," says Cummins.

    • 700,000 signatures are needed in California to put this initiative on the ballot. This will require an army of volunteers with clipboards to gather the signatures. See below for how you can contribute to this effort.

    • Go to www.OrganicConsumers.org and click on the "Millions Against Monsanto" campaign page to see where you can sign up to be a volunteer.

    • Significant funding providers for this campaign include: Dr. Bronner's - $1 million, Nature's Path - $500k, Mercola.com - $500k, Organic Consumers Association - $250k and others.

Health Ranger speaks out against GMOs on steps of capitol building in Austin, Texas

    Monday, October 03, 2011
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger
Editor of NaturalNews.com (See all articles...)

(NaturalNews) As part of the Rally for Real Food event that demands GMO labeling of food, Mike Adams (the Health Ranger) delivered a rousing speech from the steps of the Austin, Texas capitol building. He joined a lineup of other hard-hitting GMO labeling advocates such as Neil Carman Ph.D., a program director of the Sierra Club, Judith McGeary of the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance (http://farmandranchfreedom.org), Ken Whitman, the president of Natural Vitality (www.NaturalVitality.com), and Doug Foreman, CEO of the Beanitos snack food company (www.Beanitos.com) which is taking a courageous stand against GMOs and is certified GMO-free by the Non-GMO Project (http://www.nongmoproject.org/2011/0...).

NaturalNews has posted pictures from the event in a Facebook album, viewable at:
    http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...

In this photo album, you'll see pictures of children holding protest signs, crowds of people tuning in and learning about why GMO labeling is so important for our future, and pictures of the Health Ranger and other speakers talking to the public and the local press. Video footage from the event will be posted soon by several organizations, including NaturalNews and the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance.

The purpose of the rally was to raise awareness about the dangers of GMOs and call for public unity in demanding GMO labeling in foods. "The public has a right to know what's in the food they buy and feed their children," said Mike Adams at the event. "This is a fundamental issue of our right to know what we're eating. We the People demand that the foods we buy be accurately labeled so that can make an informed choice about avoiding genetically engineered ingredients."

The war against GMOs can be won, says Adams
Mike Adams says victory against GMOs is within our reach, but a tremendous amount of work will be required for the People of America to overcome the corruption, the fraudulent science and the dishonest marketing and P.R. tactics of GMO seed producers.

"We must make our voices louder than those of the lobbyists and the greed-driven corporations that exert heavy influence over government regulators and lawmakers," Adams explained. "Through public protests, and the public shaming of those companies which continue to secretly use genetically engineered ingredients without labeling it on their products, we will overpower the lies and deceptions that characterize the GMO industry, and we will restore sanity and integrity to our seeds and crops."

Adams is a key member of a growing number of outspoken anti-GMO advocates -- a group that includes Jeffrey Smith from the Institute of Responsible Technology, Ronnie Cummins from the Organic Consumers Association, Alex Jones from InfoWars.com and Dr. Joseph Mercola from Mercola.com (among many others).

This rally was part of the kicking off of Non-GMO Month which continues through October, 2011. A great number of events, public awareness campaigns, protests and other activities are taking place this month. Stay tuned to NaturalNews.com for up-to-date coverage of the growing grassroots movement to eradicate GMOs from America and protect the future of agriculture for all humankind.
