Senate bill retains $400B in Medicare cuts

Medicare cuts will stay in the Senate's health care overhaul.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) offered an amendment to restore more than $400 billion for Medicare, but it was defeated, 58-42.

Republicans claim seniors enrolled in the Medicare Advantage program will lose some benefits. Democrats say that no guaranteed benefits will be lost and that the cuts are necessary to help keep Medicare solvent.

An amendment to protect guaranteed benefits was passed unanimously.
