Deputies Shot, Suspect on the Loose Near Chicago
Deputies Shot, Suspect on the Loose Near Chicago
HOLIDAY HILLS, Ill. — Oct 16, 2014, 12:54 PM ET
Authorities were searching for a man suspected of shooting two sheriff's deputies in suburban Chicago early Thursday, and warning he should be considered "armed and extremely dangerous."
Investigators believe that 52-year-old Scott Peters fled after opening fire with a rifle as deputies responded to a domestic dispute around 1:30 a.m. at a home in Holiday Hills, McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren said. He said deputies are going door-to-door in the small village to make sure everyone is safe.
"We simply don't know his whereabouts at this time," Nygren said, adding that "many, many" deputies are involved with the search.
The sheriff said Peters, a military veteran, is being sought on two counts of attempted murder and should be considered "armed and extremely dangerous."
Nygren said the two deputies who were shot are in stable condition, but no other details about their injuries were provided. The suspect's wife and child, who were in the home, weren't injured, he said.
Holiday Hills is about 45 miles northwest of downtown Chicago.
Nygren said he had little information about the circumstances surrounding the incident. He said Peters was a military veteran, and that local police didn't have "much of a past history" with him.

APScott Peters, 52, remains on the loose after wounding two sheriff's deputies early Thursday.
A furious manhunt in the suburbs north of Chicago for an “armed and extremely dangerous” ex-military man ended Thursday evening hours after he allegedly opened fire on three sheriff’s deputies, seriously injuring one.
Police announced the arrest of Scott B. Peters, "without incident," around 5:12 p.m. local time. The bust came after police first responded to the Holiday Hills home of Peters, 52, around 1:30 a.m. Thursday following a reported domestic dispute. Once on scene, McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren says Peters unloaded several rounds through the door of the home, some 50 miles northwest of Chicago, then opened the door and continued firing, the Chicago Tribune reported.
A female officer, a 12-year veteran, was shot in the leg and is in stable condition, while a male deputy, on the force for seven years, was hit in the leg and abdomen and left in serious but stable condition, Nygren said.

The third deputy returned fire, though it’s unclear if Peters was wounded. His wife and daughter were able to safely escape the home, according to the newspaper.
Authorities were going door-to-door in their search for the veteran.

Nearby schools were put on lockdown as authorities scoured the neighborhood with SWAT teams and vehicles. Neighbors were kept from returning home as the community turned into a war zone, residents said.
“It was horrible,” Nancy Bulava, 53, told the Tribune. “I was scared to death.”
