According to reports, an Islamist militia with possible links to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group says it has “secured” a U.S. embassy compound in Tripoli, Libya.
Nearly a month ago, Americans were ordered to evacuate the compound amidst fighting in the nation between government forces and radical groups.
On Sunday, an Associated Press journalist was able to walk through the compound after the Dawn of Libya, which is an umbrella group for radical Islamist groups, invited onlookers inside to prove they had gained control of it. They reported that the windows were broken out, but most of the equipment remained untouched.

A commander for the radical group said that his forces entered and remained in control of the compound since last week. However, Fox News reports that they haven’t been able to independently confirm the group’s claim.
Video posted online showed men playing in a pool within the compound. Posting to Twitter, U.S. Ambassador to Libya Safira Deborah said she believed the video to have been recorded at the embassy’s residential annex.

This video was all over the internet today, at the same time that it was widely reported that an abandoned annex of the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli was taken over by a group of armed rebels.

According to the Washington Times, those in the video are members of an Islamist militia group called the Dawn of Libya:

A commander for the umbrella Islamist militia group, the Dawn of Libya, told The Associated Press that his fighters had been in control of the compound since last week. The group granted access to the compound to an AP reporter, who said some windows had been broken, but most of the equipment there appeared to remain untouched.

The news was that the residential compound was seized, but the main embassy structure itself remains undisturbed. The U.S. government withdrew all employees from Tripoli weeks ago when violence and unrest increased between rival groups.
It is a shocking reminder of how things have changed over the last few years.
It was September 11, 2012, when the Benghazi embassy was attacked and three Americans were killed. We’ve now pulled completely out of the capital city, and our taxpayer-built pool is being enjoyed by those that, let’s just say, won’t be inviting us over for a swim any time soon…
