Doritos Bag Leads Police To 3 NorCal Rape Suspects

DAVIS (CBS) ― A bag of Doritos was the key piece of evidence for investigators in a rape case, helping them find and convict three people responsible for a brutal attack in Davis.

Police said the victim thought she could trust four strangers to be gentlemen and give her a ride home.

But on August 12, 2006, the men were anything but gentle. Driving the woman - whose name is being withheld - from downtown Sacramento to Davis to a remote area near County Road 102, where Deputy District Attorney Steve Mount said the attack started.

"Israel Sanchez took her over (to this area), he was given a condom by the front seat passenger and he raped her, when he was done, he said 'Who's next,'" explained Mount.

"But in the early morning out here it was so dark the woman was unable to give police a good description of her attackers. They did find DNA evidence on those condoms but it did not match anything they had on file," said Mount.

But then, detectives found a bag of Doritos chips.

"It was only from this fingerprint that lead to the fourth individual in the car," said Mount.

The fourth man, who didn't directly take part in the assault, gave the authorities the names of the others. Mount said getting the evidence was enough to convict the three, but not take back what happened to the young victim.

"She will never be the same. But it is some solace to know that the individuals who did this will be off the streets for a very long time," concluded Mount.
