A man faces charges after authorities said he jumped and ran from a serious crash Sunday afternoon.

Jose Antonio Mariano-Gonzalez of 139 Garfield St., Statesville, was charged with felony driving while impaired, felony hit-and-run, felony serious injury and was wanted on a domestic violence protection order violation, said the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said Mariano-Gonzalez was driving a vehicle that crashed on Turnersburg Highway near Bethany Road on Sunday afternoon. A passenger in his vehicle was critically injured in the crash and was airlifted from the scene to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. His name was not available Monday afternoon.

After the crash, the driver, along with two other passengers, jumped from the vehicle and fled the area on foot, said First Sgt. Travis Baity of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

The highway patrol requested and received assistance from the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office to try to apprehend the three who fled the scene. Sgt. David Prevette and his canine, Rico, tracked the three from the crash scene, said Iredell Sheriff Phil Redmond.

Rico followed the track into the woods and across a creek, Prevette said. He found one of the suspects lying behind a log. That man was taken into custody.

Rico then followed the trail through the woods to a tall wooden privacy fence, where a citizen told deputies that he observed two people cross the fence and run into the Countryview Road area, Prevette said.

Sgt. Alan Cranford and his canine, Simba, picked up the track on the other side of the fence and the dog tracked to two residences that the men had entered, Prevette said. One of those residences was on Laws Lane.

Mariana-Gonzalez and another man, Renato Villalon of 315 Fieldstone Circle, Statesville were taken into custody on Laws Lane, Prevette said. Both face breaking and entering charges.

The identity of the third person was not available.
