DURHAM -- Someone broke into a Hispanic leader's home the night after protesters shut down an anti-immigration speech at UNC-Chapel Hill.

The burglar broke in and taped a news clipping about the protest to the mirror above Andrea Bazán's mantel with the message, "NOT OK," according to a Durham police report. Nothing was taken.

A native of Argentina, Bazán is chairwoman of the National Council of La Raza and helped to found El Pueblo, North Carolina's largest immigrant advocacy agency.

She said neither La Raza nor El Pueblo had anything to do with the protest. A Carolina Hispanic Association member tried to intervene, urging protesters to let former Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo finish his speech April 14, she said.

"The students ... got out of control," Bazán said. "They have not been part of the work that we have been doing in the state for almost two decades now, and I do not support their activity at all."

As a top Hispanic leader, Bazán has faced death threats in the past. Her home was broken into on Labor Day. Currently the president of the philanthropic Triangle Community Foundation, she often has a bodyguard when she speaks publicly.

"This is part of our immigration debate which, unfortunately, over time has gotten out of hand," she said. "I'm confident that cooler heads with prevail and all sides can be heard. I don't feel that this is a real threat in any shape or form."

El Pueblo director Tony Asion said threatening letters, e-mail messages and phone calls have become common for Hispanic activists, but breaking into a home is unacceptable.

"It's one thing that they make threats. It's another thing that people are taking action and not just opposing your views but actually breaking into your house."

    Diverity doesn't bring Unity.

Our Gov't and the illegals themselves have cultivated dissention in our country, which I believe is just what the powers- that- be want, because as our society becomes so diverse and dis-joined, it makes our people and country easier to conquer.

Well, what do you expect when you created a problem by accusing people of racism, being lazy, how the hispanics keep this country going, total disregard of the problems they cause, falsly accusing people and law enforcement of doing things they don't do, all the "special" rights and demands for JUST the latino community, blatent racism etc......I mean please, if it's gotten out of hand it's by your own creation. You have created the climate because from day one it was nothing but division and hate, and now you got it. Say something enough times and scream it loud enough and you will get what you want.......

One word sums up my feelings:
    KARMA.
The flag flies at half-mast out of grief for the death of my beautiful, formerly-free America. May God have mercy on your souls.

Kinda like the way millions of them have "broken into our country"? Not so good when you're on the receiving end I guess.

LOL...if this story is 'true' the perp should have stayed and declared him/herself an undocumented tenant. Demanded she provide food, healthcare and Spanish as a second language education. Of course the 'perp' would also be allowed to make demands on how the house is run from then on. All future decisions in the household would then have to be for the benefit of the 'perp' while ignoring the wishes of or detriment to the 'Legal Tenant'.

Hispanics are not the problem here. The issue is about illegal immigration whether they be from Ireland, Mexico, China, where ever. This issue is very sensitive and both sides must learn to argue without resorting to violence.
