INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A man was shot on the near south side of the city early Thursday morning during a home invasion.

According to a woman living in the house, the homeowner shot the intruder after the man entered their home with a crowbar. The woman said she told her husband to grab his gun because someone was breaking into the house. Her husband went downstairs and found a man standing in their kitchen holding a crowbar.

“She heard a noise like someone kicking in the door [and] then she heard a window bust in,” said Crystal Abbeduto, who said her mother, father and 22-year-old sister live in the home.

“You come in with any type of weapon, you’re going to use it if you see a person. My father acted in the right way, doing what he had to do to protect his family,” Abbeduto said.

Abbeduto’s mother, Jewel Henderson, was inside and said she just moved into the two-story house yesterday.

The man, Jerry Henderson, 44, asked the intruder what he was doing in their home. The man told the couple he had been evicted and he had been told by the landlord to kick them out.

The woman who lived there, Jewel Henderson, 54, said Jerry told the man he was lying and ordered him to sit at the kitchen table until the police came.

The suspect was shot in the stomach and taken to the hospital. He is reportedly in critical condition.

”I guess the man had a chance to swing the crowbar because my husband shot him,” Jewel said.
