Ali Majlat, 35, had been released from jail in his native country months before travelling to Britain and sleeping rough.

He punched, kicked and dragged his 21 year old victim to the ground as she wait for a train at Wakefield Kirkgate Station, West Yorkshire.

She managed to run off but he caught her and raped her before making off with her mobile phone, purse and bracelet last October.

Majlat told a prison psychiatrist he committed the offences because he wanted to go to prison where he would be fed, housed and taught English.

He feld to London after the attack in Wakefield where he had been to visit his brother in the city's maximum security prison.

Majlat, who was arrested days later after a nationwide appeal by British Transport Police, admitted rape and robbery when he appeared at Leeds Crown Court.

Judge Alistair McCallum has asked the Crown Prosecution Service to investigate Maljat's criminal history in Romania, particularly any sexual offences.

He said he is considering passing a life sentence when Maljat next appears before him in April.

The judge said: "It appears he was released from prison in Romania in June 2008 then immediately came across here and presumably enters on a passport which allows him to do so under EU regulations."

He wanted to know if there were any procedures in place to alert customs officers to criminals like Majlat travelling to the UK from Romania under EEC regulations.

"This is going to be something we will have to be looking at more regularly," he added.

The court heard Majlat entered the UK immediately after being released from a Romanian jail last June after serving time for theft and attempted robbery.

Three months later he was jailed for eight weeks by Horseferry Road magistrates in London for burglary.

Illegal Romanians are also wreaking havoc in Italy. However, the Italians, especially in the Southern portion of the nation, don't seem to be as "tolerant" of the assaults on their fellow citizens as the British.
