Pressure-cooker bomb instructions in al-Qaeda magazine

Instructions to make bombs out of pressure cookers similar to those believed the source of two explosions in Boston on Monday were published two years ago in Inspire, an online magazine tied to al-Qaeda and the late U.S.-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, an analysis of the magazine shows.

The article, "How to Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom," by "the AQ Chef" instructed would-be bombers to glue shrapnel to the inside of a pressure cooker and then "fill in the cooker with the inflammable material."

Would-be bombers, the article said, should use gloves to prevent their fingerprints from being found on the bomb fragments and to "put you [sic] faith in Allah and pray for the success of your operation."

The summer 2010 issue of Inspire featured several articles on what it called "the open-source Jihad," which instructed readers on how to make their own terrorist materials.

Awlaki, the magazine's founder, was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen in 2011.

The recipe – along with a rationale for post-9/11 terror – was printed three years ago in al-Qaeda’s English-language promotional online magazine, Inspire.
In an article, it instructed readers on how, as its headline writers put it, to “Make a bomb in the kitchen of your Mom”.

It gave the types of explosive, timers and other ingredients needed – along with, it said, a pressure cooker.

From previous reports we know the cooker was packed with nails and ball bearings, the metal trash can where the bomb may have been hidden probably added to the shrapnel.
Two bombs blew up seconds apart Monday at the finish line of one of the world’s most storied races, tearing off limbs and leaving the streets spattered with blood and strewn with broken glass. Three people were killed, including an 8-year-old boy, and more than 170 were wounded.

A law enforcement source told CBS News that one of the explosive devices appears to have been placed in a metal pressure cooker (a metal kitchen pot with a locked down top) which had been placed in a black nylon bag or backpack. Investigators also found pieces of an electronic circuit board possibly indicating a timer was used in the detonation of the bomb.

A law enforcement official told CBS News that the two bombs that exploded were made to look like discarded property. It is still unknown if one or both bombs were in garbage cans. One may have been on the sidewalk.
