DOWNTOWN — It's been a steamy few days in Chicago.
In fact, it's hotter than Las Vegas, Phoenix, Orlando, Los Angeles and even Austin. It might even be the hottest big city in the United States on Monday, said AccuWeather meteorologist Tom Kines. Even in Cairo, it's only 85.
"Today, in the Chicago area, while it's not [going to] be the hottest place in the U.S., it's certainly [going to] come close," Kines said. Chicago could "be one of the hottest major cities in the U.S. today, if not the hottest."
Chicago's set to hit 95 degrees on Monday, said Andrew Krein, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
That's about 15 degrees warmer than the high 70s the city normally gets this time of year.
It'll stay warm the rest of the week: Tuesday should see temperatures dip to the mid-80s along the lake and the low 90s further inland, Krein said. Wednesday will see temperatures in the mid-80s near the lake and the upper 80s further west.
Thursday is expected to have temperatures return to the low 90s before they dip to the mid- to upper 80s Friday, Krein said.
Despite the heat, the city isn't expected to break any records this week, Krein said. It could come close on Monday, when the record is 97 degrees, but the rest of the week will see records in the upper 90s while the actual temperatures dip.
There will be a mix of sun and clouds throughout the week, Krein said. There's a chance for thunderstorms and rain showers to hit Monday night with scattered storms also possible Tuesday to Thursday, but Tuesday should be largely sunny.
On Monday, the air quality index for the city was expected to be "unhealthy for sensitive groups," meaning people with lung disease and active children and adults should "reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors," according to AirNow, which tracks air quality around the United States.
