Fallout From Harry Reid’s Comments Continues As John McCain Chimes In
January 18, 2010 by Personal Liberty News Desk
Scores of Republicans have called on Senate majority leader Harry Reid’s resignation for his racially insensitive comments, and blasted the Democrats when they came out in support of Reid. The latest prominent member to do so was none other than John McCain (R-Ariz.).
The 2008 Republican presidential candidate has said he was "stunned" at how differently the Democrats treated their leader caught in a similar controversy, while in 2002 they called for the resignation of the then majority leader Trent Lott who had publically praised a pro-segregation politician.
McCain told NBC’s Today show that he sees "a stunning double standard as far as the treatment of Senator Lott, who also made unfortunate and inopportune remarks, and the treatment of Harry Reid by the liberal left."
When asked by journalists about his view, Reid’s counterpart in the Senate, Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), refused to comment, however.
The latest controversy began after a new book revealed that during the 2008 presidential campaign Reid described candidate Barack Obama as a "light-skinned" African-American "with no Negro dialect unless he wanted one."
Harry Reid has since expressed regret in a phone call to Obama and the president accepted the apology.
