FCC releases Internet speed test tool UPDATED PLAN

FCC releases Internet speed test tool

    Mar 11 2010
    WASHINGTON
    Thu Mar 11, 2010 9:18pm EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Thursday launched a broadband test service to help consumers clock the speed of their Internet.

    Technology

Located at the site www.broadband.gov , the test is aimed at allowing consumers to compare their actual speeds with the speeds advertised by their providers.

The FCC release follows an FCC meeting in September where officials said that actual speeds were estimated to lag by as much as 50 percent during busy hours.

"The FCC's new digital tools will arm users with real-time information about their broadband connection and the agency with useful data about service across the country," FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said in a statement.

The FCC is also collecting information about where broadband is not available. Consumers can email the FCC at fccinfo@fcc.gov or call the FCC.

Why does the FCC want all of our addresses and all that extra data for the speed test?

How else will they know what area has good speed and which has slow speed unless you tell them where the test is being done?

You don't have to put your real address. They won't know if you use an address from across the street, across town or across the country. You will still get to see your speed results.

My brother won't send me email because his neighbors have him convinced that the FEDS read every email that is sent.

How many people in the country send emails each day?
How many emails are sent in the country each day?
How many FEDS would it take to read all of them?

    But he still believes it.

Learn how the National Broadband Plan will help ensure that all Americans have access to high-performance broadband.

The National Broadband Plan will be published on March 17, 2010.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) was signed into law on February 17, 2009. The Broadband Initiatives funded in the Act are intended to accelerate broadband deployment across the United States. The Recovery Act authorizes the FCC to create a National Broadband Plan, that “shall seek to ensure that all people of the United States have access to broadband capability and shall establish benchmarks for meeting that goal.â€

    What is Broadband?

The term broadband commonly refers to high-speed Internet access that is always on and faster than the traditional dial-up access.

How is broadband different from dial-up service?
