JUAREZ -- Juarez Mayor Jose Reyes Ferriz announced Friday that federal law enforcement officials were taking over the city's emergency communications center as part of the Joint Chihuahua Operation aimed at organized crime.

Police Chief Roberto Orduña Cruz turned over control of the center to the Federal Public Safety Secretariat, which will monitor emergency calls and security cameras, and recommend changes to police radio frequencies.

The unprecedented measure comes at a time when unknown assailants have targeted city and state police.
