Martelly submits passport to quash 'birther' allegations

Haitian president Michel Martelly submitted his passport to public scrutiny on Thursday to quash allegations that he holds dual US and Haitian citizenship. Martelly has felt the heat from the Haitian answer to US ‘birthers’ – who doubted Barack Obama’s citizenship – for months. In an effort to finally put an end to the speculation Martelly gave a press conference with back up from the US ambassador to Haiti. Martelly, who previously lived in the US, admitted that he had held a Green Card, which he said he handed back when he assumed office. Leading Haitian politicians are barred from holding dual citizenship.
