Federal judge tosses voter ID lawsuit, meaning law will be enforced

ROME - A federal judge ruled Thursday that Georgia's voter identification law does not impose a significant burden on the right to vote, meaning the law will be enforced.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Murphy of Rome, in a 159-page ruling, also praised what he called the state's ``exceptional efforts to contact voters who potentially lacked a valid form of Photo ID.''

Murphy wrote that challengers to the law are ``hard-pressed to show that voters in Georgia, in general, are not aware of the Photo ID requirement.''

Also, he said that because voters have the option of voting absentee without photo identification, they are not barred from participating in elections.

David Brackett, a lawyer opposing the voter ID law, said today that opponents are disappointed with the judge's decision and were considering whether to appeal.

Brackett said Murphy's ruling will result in a lot of Georgians not being able to vote in person -- the way they prefer to vote.

WHAT THIS REALLY MEANS: Illegal aliens with fraudlent ID's will no longer be able to vote in person because they will not be able to comply with the VOTER ID law. Yeah!!!!!!

Woo Hoo we need that in California.

Way to go Judge! You are a true American and deserve the title of "your Honor."

It would be nice if other judges deserved this title as well.

I would think this would be featured on the Homepage. This is a really MAJOR vicotry, and it was listed by AOL News yesterday as one of their main stories. Unfortunately, the "second line of defense" for the OB Lobby has been our own justice system. It's refreshing how opinions can change once you get outside the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals!
