Studies show a disproportionate number of Latinos are involved in DWI crashes statewide. Just out of the hospital, Francisco Javier Martinez, faced a judge with the help of a walker Wednesday. He survived a fatal crash on Raleigh's beltline Sunday, but two brothers and their teenage friend did not. Martinez is one of a disproportionate number of Latino drivers accused of drunk driving. But the candidate for governor from Charlotte, said Martinez, head of UNC-Greensboro’s Center for New North Carolinians, has been “the most anti-immigrant candidate in the mix.” The fact that both are the same man, according to Martinez, says as much about the political process in North Carolina as it does about Pat McCrory. “That in itself proves the point that when it comes to immigration issues, our candidates have a political agenda,” said Martinez, former director of Hispanic-Latino affairs in the Hunt and Easley administrations. “The dialogue is so bad, it’s as if we’re having a schoolyard fight.” 7-Year-Old Dies in Hit-and-Run Case By Mike Charbonneau for WRAL TV, April 15, 2008 Four Oaks, N.C. — A 7-year-old boy who was critically injured by a suspected drunk driver in Johnston County, has died, his family said Tuesday. State troopers said Marcus Lassiter, 7, was trying to cross Heath Road when a car struck him on Sunday. An adult had been watching him and another young child play in the yard, his aunt, Mary Ann Cooley, said. Cooley said the family made the decision to remove Marcus from life support, and he died late Monday night. Relatives said doctors at Duke University Hospital had declared Marcus brain dead. The child’s leg was broken and he had brain damage. The driver, Pollo Hernandez Rodriquez, faces charges of felony hit and run, driving while impaired, driving without a license, driving a stolen car and causing serious injury with a motor vehicle. The Highway Patrol said Tuesday they believe Rodriquez did not give his real name to police. Troopers are trying to determine his identity to run a criminal background. That will help determine what charges are appropriate. Rodriquez remained in jail Tuesday, held on a $1 million bond. Police said they arrested Rodriquez after he tried to flee from the scene. Forsyth County Wants Help With Immigration Costs AP, April 15, 2008 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners is asking state lawmakers for a plan to help counties with the costs of illegal immigration. The vote Monday came less than a month after the board rejected Commissioner Beaufort Bailey's request for a 13-member committee to see how much illegal immigration costs the county. The Winston-Salem Journal reported Tuesday the resolution acknowledges county officials have little influence and no authority over the laws regarding illegal immigration. Commission Chairwoman Gloria Whisenhunt says local governments need help with the costs of illegal immigration. Bailey says he's not sure the resolution will do much. County budget director Joe Bartel has estimated the county spends about $11 million annually on services for illegal immigrants. Orr takes jab at McCrory's record on immigration - Doubts commitment to halt illegal workers By DAVID INGRAM for the Charlotte Observer, April 10, 2008 RALEIGH --Bob Orr, a Republican candidate for governor, sharply criticized rival Pat McCrory's record on immigration Wednesday. McCrory, Charlotte's mayor and the frontrunner in the GOP primary, fired back that Orr is getting desperate. Speaking at a news conference, Orr accused McCrory of not following up on a commitment to cut city contracts to companies that hire illegal immigrants. Orr questioned whether McCrory allowed contracts to continue on two high-profile projects despite the work of illegal immigrants. Orr cited a 2006 Observer interview in which McCrory said he didn't know if the NASCAR Hall of Fame could be finished on budget without illegal immigrants. McCrory said then that he assumed contractors were following the law, and he said he assumed illegal immigrants helped build Bobcats Arena. "I can't let him keep going around talking about leadership and how tough he is on immigration without setting the record straight," said Orr, a former N.C. Supreme Court justice. In an interview, McCrory chided Orr for providing no actual evidence that illegal immigrants worked on the projects. Nine restaurant workers arrested on illegal immigration charges AP, March 21, 2008 CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Nine workers at an Italian restaurant have been arrested on immigration charges after federal officials got information about undocumented employees, The Charlotte Observer reported Friday. U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement agents arrested the workers at an Olive Garden restaurant Thursday afternoon, shortly before the restaurant's busy dinner hours. A manager at the restaurant referred questions to a company spokeswoman who did not return phone calls from the newspaper Thursday night. Marchers call for immigration reform, end to racism By Brie Handgraaf / Times-News, March 19, 2008 Despite the rain, about 15 people from around the state and as far away as Vermont attended a candlelight vigil Wednesday at Burlington City Hall to fight for immigration law reform and against anti-immigration feelings. "NAFTA supporters argue for free trade and free markets," said Eric Francisco Jonas, member of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee in Greensboro. "It is unnatural for some markets to move across borders freely and others like the labor market to not be able to." The event was part of the 22nd Pilgrimage for Justice and Peace, in which marchers began in Asheville on Palm Sunday and are walking across North Carolina to Raleigh on Good Friday. The events were organized by the Carolina Interfaith Task Force on Central America. Orr: Sue feds over immigration costs DAVID INGRAM for the Charlotte Observer, March 11, 2008 RALEIGH --Bob Orr, a Republican candidate for N.C. governor, said Tuesday that, if elected, he would consider suing the federal government to try to recoup costs related to illegal immigration. "If they are unable to fulfill their responsibilities, then I think we have to sue the federal government," Orr said at a news conference. "Unfortunately, if we don't do something like this, there is very little incentive on the part of the federal government to actually take constructive steps to solve this problem." Orr pointed to higher costs for education, health-care and other government services that the U.S. Supreme Court has required states to provide to all residents. Illegal immigrants, he said, do not pay enough in taxes to cover their share, and he called for a thorough study of the net cost. Immigration Court Start Date Pushed Back Again, to Early Fall AP, March 4, 2008 WASHINGTON — An immigration court scheduled to open in Charlotte has been delayed for a second time, and Rep. Sue Myrick wants to know why. Myrick's office announced the second delay on Tuesday, and said the General Services Administration did not tell her office what was causing the latest problem. The first delay occurred last July when the GSA's procurement process took longer than first anticipated. The Executive Office for Immigration Review informed Myricks office of the second delay, pushing the potential start date back to September. Immigration bill on tap next week by Robert Morris, Mrytle Beach Online, March 1, 2008 The state legislature will resume discussion of its pending immigration bill this week, with a local legislative crusader against illegal immigration overseeing its final stage. Three members each of the state House of Representatives and Senate will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday to try to resolve differences in their different versions of the immigration bill. Both chambers agree on a variety of measures to crack down on illegal immigrants through law enforcement, but disagree over the methods private employers should use to check the citizenship of new employees. After the committee hashes out those differences, the compromise bill will return to both chambers for a vote. If it passes, it will go to Gov. Mark Sanford for a signature. Immigration will confront next Mesa mayor By Allison Jones, North Carolina Public Radio - WUNC, February 18, 2008 The City of Winston-Salem is sending a message to private contractors that they may not hire illegal immigrants. City officials recently altered the language in the city's contracts with the private companies it hires. The new language won't alter any existing laws.

Remove ICLEI- Restore the Republic November 24, 2010 By Tom Deweese for Canada Free Press August 24, 2009 Many Americans ask how dangerous international policies can suddenly turn up in state and local government, all seemingly uniform to those in communities across the nation and around the globe. The answer--meet ICLEI, a non-profit, private foundation, dedicated to helping your mayor implement all of his promises. Originally known as the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), today the group simply calls itself ICLEI--Local Governments for Sustainability. In 1992, ICLEI was one of the groups instrumental in creating Agenda 21. The group's mission is to push local communities to regulate the environment--and it's having tremendous success. I have included a list of 544 American cities in which ICLEI is being paid with tax dollars from city councils to implement and enforce Sustainable Development. ICLEI is there to assure that the mayors keep their promises and meet their goals. Climate change, of course, is the ICLEI mantra. Here's just some of the programs ICLEI provides cities and towns, in order to spread their own particular political agenda in the name of community services and environmental protection, they include: Software programs to help set the goals for community development--which leads to taking control of your private property; Access to a network of Green experts, newsletters, conferences and workshops--to assure the indoctrination of city employees is complete; Toolkits, online resources, case studies, fact sheets, policy and practice manuals, and blueprints used by other communities--so you know you are not alone; Training workshops for staff and elected officials on how to develop and implement the programs--wanna bet they never seem to mention that thousands of scientists around the world now say man-made global warming is a myth and none of these programs are necessary? Probably doesn't make it into the workshop; And, of course, there's Notification of relevant grant opportunities--this is the important one--money--with severe strings attached. ICLEI recommends that the community hire a full time sustainability manager, who, even in small towns, can devote 100% of his time to assure that every nook and corner of the government is on message and under control. As I said, it's not about protecting the environment; it's about reinventing government with a specific political agenda. ICLEI and others are dedicated to controlling your locally elected public officials to quietly implement an all encompassing tyranny over every community in the nation. Like a disease, ICLEI (or others of its kind) is entrenched in most American cities, dictating policy to your locally elected officials, controlling policy and making sure they do not listen to your protests. To truly see tyranny in action, one only needs to go to a city council meeting and attempt to ask questions or discuss a sustainable development program. Most who have tried it have been literally physically removed from the chamber. It's time to remove ICLEI. Look at this list of communities where they currently hide behind the curtain--and take action to remove them. Now, before your community is run like a soviet, where there is no debate, no regard for constitutionally-guaranteed rights, no property rights, no free markets, no alternative thought. Through ICLEI there is only top-down control--just like a soviet. Remove ICLEI - Restore the Republic! ICLEI Cities Across the Country Action to Take: ICLEI is one of the most dangerous forces in the nation, particularly because so few people know if their existence. But your mayor and city council know. They are in regular meetings with them, They get memos on policy. They are told what to support and who to silence. What they fear most is exposure. Now, we can turn the tables on ICLEI by shining a bright spot light on their activities in your community. First, go to a city council meeting and listen to the discussion. Are they talking about land use, water control, development control? Are they using the language I have described in this issue? If so, Sustainable Development is ruling your community. Second, begin to ask questions. You may have to do it after the meeting, but if you can, ask during… Ask where these policies they are discussing come from. Ask if your community is now paying dues to a group called the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI). Once you have determined that ICLEI is truly in your community, they the battle can begin. Remember, the list of ICLEI cities on this page came directly from the ICLEI web page--so you already know they are there. Third, do not begin to discuss UN policies. Instead, keep your discussion on a local level, as in how such policies may impact local citizens. Fourth, I have enclosed a petition.Make copies of this petition, which calls on your city council to stop paying dues to ICLEI and to remove them from policy making in your community. Pass out your copies and get as many citizens as possible to sign it. Make copies of this issue of The DeWeese Report to educate your neighbors on the dangers of Sustainable Development. Deliver the singed petitions to City Council and cause a firestorm of protest if they ignore you. And do not stop until ICLEI and Sustainable Development are removed from your community.
