Five arrested after gun battle with San Diego police

Five arrested after gun battle with San Diego police

    7:06 AM | June 11, 2009

Five people were arrested Wednesday night after a gun battle with San Diego police that began with officers chasing suspects in a street robbery, police said.

One suspect was apparently shot by police. None of the officers were hurt.

The incident began when undercover officers saw two men and a woman rob a woman at knife- and gunpoint and then drive away in a van.

Police chased the van through several streets in the Mountain View neighborhood. At one point, a suspect began firing at police, with at least one round hitting the windshield of an unmarked police vehicle. Two officers returned fire.

The chase ended when the van's driver smashed into a concrete pillar beneath Interstate 805 on Palm Avenue. A police dog helped in the arrests.

Jeff Quijano, 21, was charged with three counts of attempted murder and is in the trauma unit of a local hospital. Andrea Ramos, 18, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and evading arrest. Jose Lopez and Octavio Ibarra, both 23, were charged with parole violations, and Isaura Morales, 22, was charged with an outstanding misdemeanor warrant.

Sounds more like Tijuana than San Diego.

Robbery suspects caught after shootout, pursuit

    2:00 a.m. June 11, 2009

SAN DIEGO: Three men and two women suspected in a robbery were arrested last night after shooting at officers and leading them on a chase through southern San Diego neighborhoods. Officers wounded one of the men.

One of the bullets from the shooter pierced a patrol car's windshield, police Capt. Jim Collins said.

The shootout happened moments after a pedestrian had been robbed on Gamma Street near 38th Street about 7:45 p.m., Collins said.
Police who were investigating an unrelated incident saw a van being driven erratically. At the time, police had not yet received a report of the pedestrian robbery, Collins said.

The officers who noticed the van decided to follow it. The van soon stopped, and one of the men got out near 39th and Teak streets.

The man then fired several shots at the officers, Collins said. Two officers in the patrol car fired back. The shooter, who was hit in the stomach, jumped back in the van and it sped off.

Other officers and a police helicopter then joined the chase. The driver went east on Imperial Avenue and south on 47th Street, and eventually onto Palm Avenue under Interstate 805, where the van crashed into a guardrail.

One of the men jumped out of the van and tried to run. A police dog helped capture him, Collins said.

The others, including a woman who was driving, were arrested. Officers recovered a gun they believe was used in the shootout.
Collins said the shooter was taken to a hospital, where he was in stable condition.

The suspects, ranging in age from 21 to 23, are believed to have been connected to the robbery on Gamma Street, Collins said. –A.M.

Robbery Suspect Enters Plea from Hospital Bed

    Last Update: 6/12 5:36 pm

SAN DIEGO - A man shot by detectives after he allegedly opened fire on them following a robbery pleaded not guilty from his hospital bed Friday to attempted murder and assault charges.

Jeff Quijano, 21, was ordered held on $1 million bail.

During the defendant's arraignment at Scripps Mercy Hospital, Judge Ronald Frazier scheduled a readiness conference for July 24 and a preliminary hearing for Aug. 14.

Two alleged accomplices -- 22-year-old Isaura Morales Naranjo and 18-year-old Andrea Maria Ramos -- were also arraigned Friday. Both young women appeared at the downtown courthouse, and each was ordered held on $1 million bail.

Morales is charged with six counts of attempted murder, including three charges of attempted murder of a peace officer. She also faces three counts each of assault on a peace officer and assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and one count of being an accessory after the fact.

Quijano faces the same charges, plus an additional count of robbery.

Both Morales and Quijano face life in prison with parole if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Clay Biddle.

Ramos faces six years and four months in prison if convicted of one count each of robbery and reckless evading.

Biddle told Judge David Szumowski that Ramos and Quijano robbed a woman at knifepoint about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 3800 block of Gamma Street in Southcrest.

The assailants fled in a van -- with Morales driving -- when the victim said the police were coming, the prosecutor alleged.

Three San Diego police plainclothes detectives driving in the area saw the van's driver run a stop sign and go into an alley near 39th and Teak streets, Biddle said.

Quijano got into a shooting position and fired at the detectives' car, narrowly missing the officers and hitting the windshield of their vehicle, the prosecutor alleged.

Two detectives returned fire and wounded Quijano.

At that point, Ramos took over driving the van and eventually crashed it into a guardrail near Palm Avenue under an Interstate 805 overpass.

The officers who returned fire were identified as Detective Ramon Valentin, a 20-year department veteran from Southeast Division, and Detective Martha Gasca, a 10-year veteran in the gang unit.

A status conference was scheduled for Tuesday.
