Wraps and salads sold at Kroger, Trader Joe's recalled due to parasite concern

Federal officials are warning consumers to be on guard for signs of intestinal distress if they've eaten any of more than two dozen types of salads and wraps sold by several major retailers around the U.S. In a public health alert issued Monday night, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) cited worries that beef, pork and poultry salad and wrap products may be infected by a parasite known as cyclospora cayetanenis.

Distributed nationwide by Caito Foods of Indianapolis, the possibly tainted products were sold by retailers including Kroger, Trader Joe's and Walgreens. Caito learned of the problem when its supplier, Fresh Express, notified it of a recall involving some of the lettuce in products packaged under a variety of brand names.

All of the 25 product varieties are now out of date, produced from July 15 to 18 with the "Best By," "Enjoy by," Best if Sold By" or "Sell By" dates ranging from July 18 through July 23.

"FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers' refrigerators and that consumers may be at risk due to the length of the cyclospora incubation period," which ranges from two to 14 days, the agency stated.

Transmitted in foods tainted by fecal matter, cyclospora can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, body aches and fever a week or more after someone consumes food or liquid contaminated with the parasite.

Separately, officials are still working to determine a single source as causing a 15-state outbreak of cyclospora parasite infections tied to salads from McDonald's. As of Thursday, 286 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclospora infection were reported in people who consumed salads from the fast-food chain, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Caito Foods recently drew unwanted attention in a multi-state salmonella outbreak tied to recalled pre-cut melon that sickened 77 people in nine states.

Cargill recalls more than 132,000 lbs. of beef possibly contaminated with E. coli, USDA says

Attention, beef lovers: the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a recall for more than 130,000 pounds of Cargill Meat Solutions’ ground beef.

The meat was likely contaminated with E. coli, a determination the FSIS, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other entities made after investigating a possible outbreak that killed one person and sickened 17 others in July. The FSIS is a branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

“Raw ground beef was the probable source of the reported illness,” the FSIS said in the statement. Those infected with E. coli can develop diarrhea and vomiting. A severe infection can lead to kidney failure.

The beef was packaged at the company’s Fort Morgan, Colorado, location in June before it was shipped across the nation.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” the FSIS said.

The news comes after Cargill recalled more than 25,000 pounds of beef in August due to a possible E. coli contamination, though no illnesses were reported at that time.
