Two men armed with knives stormed a Catholic church in northern France and reportedly slit the throats of a priest and one other person.

The priest, 86-year-old Jacques Hamel, has died and French newspaper Le Figaro says the second victim is in a critical condition.
The knifemen got into the building through a back entrance, locked the doors and held five people hostage.

The assailants were "neutralised" by police as they came out of the church reportedly shouting "Allahu Akbar". French media reported shots being fired.

The priest, two nuns and two parishioners were detained during morning mass at the church in the town of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, near the city of Rouen in Normandy.

Father Jacques Hamel was killed in the church by the hostage-takers

TV footage of the sealed-off crime scene showed one person being stretchered into an ambulance. The remaining hostages were brought out alive.

Islamic State claimed two of its "soldiers" carried out the deadly assault.

The identities of the attackers are unclear.

Anti-terror chiefs have been appointed to take charge of the investigation.

French President Francois Hollande, who is at the scene, said the attackers claimed to be members of the terror group and slammed what he described as a "vile terrorist attack".

He said IS has "declared war on us, we must fight this war by all means".

French President Francois Hollande speaks to officials outside the church

A spokesman for the interior ministry, Pierre Henri Brandet, confirmed the priest was dead and said another hostage was "between life and death".

Mr Brandet told French TV channel BFMTV: "The two hostage-takers came out of the church armed and it was at that point that they were neutralised by the police."

He added a bomb disposal team and sniffer dogs were searching the church and its surroundings for possible explosives.
One hostage managed to escape during the three-hour ordeal and raised the alarm.

The church where the attack took place

Emergency services were quickly on the scene and negotiators were summoned to talk to the hostage-takers.

French journalist Anne-Elisabeth Moutet told Sky News the assailants reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar" on the steps of the church.
Sky Correspondent Mark White said one of the attackers was known to French police and was jailed for attempting to travel to Syria to join IS.

He was recently released back into the community tagged with an electronic monitor and was on a terror watch list.

Le Figaro also reported that the church targeted in Tuesday's attack was one of several Catholic sites on the hit-list of a 24-year-old Algerian student.

Police at the scene in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray

Sid Ahled Ghlam was arrested last year on suspicion of murdering a mother-of-one during a botched attempt to attack a church in Villejuif.

He was sent by Belgian Abdelhamid Abaaoud, who directed a cell which carried out the 13 November attacks in Paris during which 130 people were killed and the 22 March attacks in Brussels that killed 32 people.

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls condemned what he described as "a barbaric attack on a church".

"The whole of France and all Catholics are wounded. We will stand together," he wrote on Twitter.

Horreur face à l'attaque barbare d'une église de Seine-Maritime. La France entière et tous les catholiques sont meurtris. Nous ferons bloc.
    5:01 AM - 26 Jul 2016 · Paris, France, France

Pope Francis also expressed his "pain and horror" and said he was appalled by the "barbaric killing".

The attack comes almost two weeks since the Bastille Day massacre in Nice which left 84 people dead after Tunisian Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhel drove a truck into a crowd celebrating the national holiday on 14 July.

France has been under a state of emergency since the terror attacks in the capital last year.

ISIS Beheads 86-Year-Old Priest in France. Democrats Mention ISIS ZERO Times At DNC.

So, the Democrats have their priorities.

While Democrats spent the night jabbering about abortion and $15 minimum wage and climate change, jihadists stormed a church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray in Normandy, France, and proceeded to behead an 86-year-old priest while shouting “Jesus Lives!”

Just joking. They were yelling “Allahu Akhbar.” But you guessed that already.

This is the fifth jihadist attack in Europe in 11 days.

So, how many times did Democrats mention ISIS last night and yesterday?

    Zero.

That’s right – 61 speakers, zero mentions of ISIS. But the Democrats did find time to put an illegal immigrant on stage, as well as an irritating comedic actress who uses her spare time auctioning sanitary napkins. They found time to take down “offensive” Mississippi state flags and wave Palestinian ones on the floor of the convention. They found time for another actress who claimed that the “border crossed” her family, and a video from J.J. Abrams about that Queen of Mystery and Light, Hillary Clinton.

The Democrats know their priorities. And defeating ISIS isn’t one of them. They’re too busy cheering lustily for a 74-year-old loonbag preaching discredited evils responsible for the murder of 100 million people in the 20th century to worry about another evil murdering priests in Normandy, fireworks-watchers in Nice, gay nightclub-goers in Orlando, and children in Jerusalem.

Sure, it was just Night One of the convention. But the disconnect on issues says volumes: Republicans worry about terrorism and crime, Democrats worry about whether men who think they’re women can go pee-pee next to the ladies.

Last week, the media complained that Donald Trump’s Republican National Convention speech was too “dark.” Perhaps it was “dark” because the Democrats have created a rather dark world for us to occupy, even as they blindly refuse to acknowledge it.

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen reacts to Normandy siege

French far-right Front National leader Marine Le Pen

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen today said the murder of a priest by two knifemen during a siege at a church has led her to fear "a new attack by Islamist terrorists".

The leader of the Front National in France reacted on Twitter soon after two armed attackers slaughtered a priest, named as Jacques Hamel, 84, inside the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, in Normandy.

A second of five hostages is fighting for life in hospital.

After the bloodbath unfolded, the far-right politician tweeted: “More horror at Saint Etienne du Rouvray. The modus operandi obviously leads one to fear a new attack by Islamist terrorists."

The two assailants were shot dead by police after entering the place of worship during a morning service, soon after 9am.

Those held hostage included the priest, two sisters from a local order, and two parishioners.

A third nun had managed to escape and raised the alarm.

A security official said the identities of the attackers and motive for the attack are unclear.

France's anti-terrorist prosecution unit is leading the investigation into the hostage attack.

Islamic State extremists have urged followers to attack French churches and the group is believed to have planned at least one church attack earlier.

Today's attack is the latest incident to shock France following the Bastille Day lorry massacre in Nice on July 14 when 84 people were killed and hundreds more were seriously injured.

Islamic state posts video of men it says were French church attackers

Islamic State's news agency on Wednesday posted a video of two men it said were those who attacked a church in France in which they pledged allegiance to the group's leader.

The video was posted by Amaq news agency a day after two men burst into the Catholic church in Normandy during a service, forced the priest to his knees and slit his throat.

The two men who identified themselves as Abu Omar and Abu Jalil el-Hanafy appeared in the one-minute video sitting on a staircase pledging loyalty to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Islamic State's leader.

One of the two attackers has been named as 19-year-old Adel Kermiche, who was under close surveillance after two failed attempts to reach Syria last year, France's anti-terrorism prosecutor said on Wednesday

The second attacker remains unidentified. Police shot and killed both assailants as they emerged from the church.
