FTC Laptops Stolen; Consumer Data Exposed
Laptops Stolen From Government Attorney's Car

    UPDATED: 7:40 am PDT June 23, 2006

WASHINGTON -- You've heard about recent thefts of government computers containing sensitive personal information?

Now the agency charged with fighting identity theft said it has lost two laptops containing personal data.

The laptops were taken from the locked car of an attorney for the Federal Trade Commission.

As if that weren't ironic enough, many of the people whose data was taken are being investigated for possible fraud and identity theft.

The FTC said it will provide free credit monitoring for the 110 people whose names, addresses, Social Security numbers -- and in some instances, financial account numbers -- were taken.

The car theft occurred about 10 days ago and managers were immediately notified.

The disclosure comes amid a widening data breach that is expected to cost the government hundreds of millions of dollars. In all, five government agencies have reported data theft, including the Veterans Affairs Department.

    Not quite an accurate statement.

Government incompetence is going to cost the taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars is the correct way to write it..

I know....why don't we suggest a gov't site "Steal my ID" online with NO security and just every legal, hard-working citizen or Legal immigrant just post their info there.

Heavy sarcasm intended. I know all of everyone's info is out there SOMEWHERE, but wouldn't such a site, make it easier for the thieves?
You know, no breaking into houses or cars or work, no carrying HEAVY laptops, etc? No risk of cutting themselves on window glass, etc?

    come on

What lawyer in their right mind would leave their lap top in the car? Seems to me someone is trying to condition us and get us used to this so they can really do the mother of all data mining and identity theft and we won't blink an eye! This is happening to often to just be coincidence!

Let's all rescind our SS numbers. Then they can hand them out to whomever they wish and we can steal them from the illegals if we need one.
