    A comment on American Culture

“I’ve come around to the view that the culture war can best be understood as a conflict between two different kinds of patriotism. On the one hand, there are people who believe being an American is all about dissent and change, that the American idea is inseparable from ‘progress.’ America is certainly an idea, but it is not merely an idea. It is also a nation with a culture as real as France’s or Mexico’s. That’s where the other patriots come in; they think patriotism is about preserving Americanness. Yet the strangest and most ironic aspect of our national culture is that we have an aversion to talking about a national culture. Samuel Huntington, one of the country’s premier social scientists, has become something of a pariah for constantly reminding people... that America is a nation, not just a government and a bunch of interest groups. Many liberals hear talk of national culture and shout ‘Nativist!’ first and ask questions later, if at all. They believe it is a sign of their patriotism that they hold fast to the idea that we are a ‘nation of immigrants’ —forgetting that we are also a nation of immigrants who became Americans.â€

I don't feel the term 'immigrant' still applies for those of us who have ancesters who have been here for generations and became part of the culture, values and language .

We are legal immgrants, unlike the hundreds of millions the traitors in our government have impoed on us for thepast 70 years or so . They have given residence to citizens from every nation on earth, and most didn't assimilate .

This has caused great divisions amoung us . We not only allowed them to practice other cultures, but even promoted it . WHO ON THIS PLANET PROMOTES AMERICAN CULTURE ?

How many other nations citizens call themselves Asian Iraqis , African Indonesians , Iranian French ? Here we have African Americans, Irish Americans, Iranian Americans .

The melting pot is now a dangerous over running salad bowl .

NoAmnasty-have you noticed the group that doesn't include American at the end anymore-some,not all just call themselves Latinos.I'm not sure if they realize its not a nationality just a race but, then again maybe they do.
I can't figure out why people keep using hyphenated American decriptions of themselves,it always makes me think if the country you put before America is so great or important why aren't you still there?

Immigrant - A person who leaves one country to settle permanently in another.

I would have to say this leaves me out. I would venture to guess this leaves out the majority of people in this country. WE ARE NOT A NATION OF IMMIGRANTS!!!!!!!

My great grandfather on my dad's side of the family was an immigrant and my grandfather on my mom's side was an immigrant, but I AM NOT!! I AM AN AMERICAN!!

I was thinking about this very thing today. Some of my co-workers and I were discussing the fact that so many schools and companies throughout the U.S. disallow any celebration of Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. In some places it's so extreme that one can't even say "Merry Christmas" anymore. In my last job (in San Diego, CA), we could only say "Happy Holidays".

So this makes me wonder how "multiculturalism" could possibly be GOOD for a country? Multiculturalism and diversity is touted to be some utopic and saintlike state of existing; it's as if people actually believe that this butting together of cultures actually creates harmony and kinship. But in actuality, it just creates culture clashes and confusion and a sense of not belonging.

When there is no unity, no common set of morals, no common religion, no common language, and no common idealogy, what results is a multitude of different cultures that clash and compete.

A perfect example of this is when school officials, faced with so many competing cultures and religions and simply not having the resources to recognize and celebrate all of them, throws his hands up in the air and cries, "Forget it! We can't celebrate EVERY religion/holiday/culture, so we won't celebrate any of them.". And this is very sad for the U.S. because it's putting us in danger of having no national identity or unified culture. Children grow up without a flag to salute, a God to worship (yes, I actually said that), heroes to look up to, and a culture to identify with.

    Very sad.
Calderon was absolutely right when he said...."Where there is a Mexican, there is Mexico".
