Obama wants to get rid of all signs of Christianity.

I'm not surprised that Obama tried to cover up Jesus name on stage because it is the same thing Obama has been doing to Jesus in all aspects of his administration!

    PS
It's not Obama who should be covering Jesus's name it's the other way around!

    PS2
I wonder if Obama would be so quick to cover the name of the Muslim God or religous figures if it were a back drop for his stage?

Ya, there doesn't seem to be any problem making us cover things up....I'm getting so sick of it, if he can't give a speech and be where an emblem is, in a relegiously free country, in a relegious or relegiously funded place, then he shouldn't be giving speeches there. I am not Muslim or Hindu and wasn't even famaliar with this Catholic thing etc, but if he went there for a speech, I wouldn't expect them to cover theirs up, just as his "request" shouldn't have been done at this place. If all relegions are respected, then respect them, don't make people deny them.

He goes on his "exotic religions love tour" overseas -- spouting off that America isn't really a Christian nation (surprise, surprise!) -- and then comes back and drops the old Dirty Dishwater of Disrespect on a Catholic college here in America that's so old it was founded in the same year we passed our Constitution.

The letters that were covered up - I.H.S. -- have several translations. http://www.seiyaku.com/customs/crosses/ihs.html

Iasu, Salvatore Hominem; which means Jesus, Savior of Men, is my own preferred.

Another translation that comes from Latin which the Jesuits might have intended since they use the intials juxtaposed with the cross is In Hoc Signo, Vinces (for "With this sign, you shall conquer"). It came about around the time that a Roman Emperor, following the conversion of his mother (later St. Helena) softened up and no more feeding the Christians to lions in the Coliseum. He also converted before his death.

As somebody who knows that campus somewhat, I think I might have been more bothered seeing that IHS and cross sign over the likes of the head of Obama (filled with mixed-up-ideologies-and-spiritualities) than not seeing it. It might seem to give him some kind of Catholic "endorsement" which his positions on issues haven't earned him -- like on abortion (and its public funding) and FOCA (which could cut off all Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements to religious hospitals like Georgetown's Medical Center if they don't abandon their religiously-based refusal to perform abortions) and a host of other issues (like limiting tax deductions for charitable donations that private religious colleges depend on, since they get little to no public funding).

I know that the painted triangle of wood used to fit into the pediment with the IHS has been used before, it wasn't just hastily put together for his speech. But the big difference is this: I think it's almost always been used before at the initiation of the Jesuit order which runs the school. Usually, that's done when Gaston Hall is being used for something decidedly "secular" such as a rock concert for the students. The room has become multi-purposed, and isn't just for academic lectures or religious services needing all 750+ seats. That's fine and well, because it's like the owners of the property deciding how they want to arrange the decorations. But being told to do it? By someone inviting himself to be a guest?

If he needed a secular setting, why did the White House ask Georgetown to let its space get used? He could have given his speech at a government auditorium, or if he was convinced he needed the setting of a college, there are others right there in D.C. which aren't religious schools. It seems like a real gaffe, at the least. "Hey, I want to speak on television at your school. Hey, make sure you hide anything that might identify your school and its religious identity as the place where I'm speaking."

The President of the school, and the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus, are getting calls and letters from upset students and alumni and faculty (active and retired) asking why Georgetown didn't just tell Obama to "take a hike" with his request. I don't know if the request to use the space came first and then the demeaning details of other conditions (hide the religious symbols or other insignia of the school) followed, so it's hard to tell whether the Georgetown people are at fault, or got backed into a corner with how the request was staged.

    Rendering Unto Caesar
    Friday, April 17, 2009
    By Patrick J. Buchanan

At the request of the White House, Georgetown University covered up all the symbols in Gaston Hall, before the Great Man spoke, including IHS, the millennia-old monogram for the name of Jesus Christ.

Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, had adopted the monogram in his seal and it became an emblem of the Jesuit order.

When it comes to rendering unto Caesar, Georgetown is not going to be outshone by Notre Dame, which stole a march by offering the nation’s avatar of abortion a doctorate of laws degree, honoris causa.

Actually, it is regrettable the IHS in Gaston Hall was not covered up in shame the first week of Lent. For that week Georgetown’s feminist and homosexual clubs, such as GU Pride, put on a Gomorrah festival about alternative lifestyles called “Sex Positive Week.â€
