In anticipation of securing a second term in the White House, former President Donald Trump is actively formulating comprehensive and assertive immigration policies – including concentration camps for illegals.
These measures are designed not only to stem the substantial influx of individuals into the U.S., but also to initiate the removal of millions who have previously crossed the border decades ago.
The plans were reported by the New York Times based on interviews with Stephen Miller and other Trump advisors. The Gray Lady characterized the plans as "an assault on immigration on a scale unseen in modern American history."
During a campaign trail last September, Trump told Iowans: "Following the Eisenhower model, we will carry out the largest domestic deportation in American history." He was referring to the 1954 expulsion drive spearheaded by his predecessor, former President Dwight Eisenhower, that saw some 1.1 million Mexicans being deported.
Here are the key components of Trump's proposals:

  • Muslim immigration restrictions: Trump aims to reinstate a version of the executive order banning travel from several Muslim-majority countries (Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen) that he previously implemented. President Biden overturned this ban on his first day in office.
  • Utilizing health policies to restrict asylum claims: Building on previous restrictions based on the pretext of controlling the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), Trump plans to renew the use of health policies, citing diseases such as tuberculosis, to curtail asylum claims.
  • Mass deportations: A second Trump administration would intensify efforts to locate and deport millions of illegal immigrants annually. This strategy involves a significant expansion of removal methods that bypass due process hearings. Federal agents would be redirected from other duties, and local law enforcement and National Guard soldiers deployed by Republican governors would be deputized for this purpose.
  • Establishment of large detention camps: Faced with overwhelmed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities, Trump proposes constructing extensive camps to detain migrants during the duration of their legal proceedings. To fund these camps, he plans to circumvent Congress and redirect Pentagon funds, similar to his approach to financing border wall construction.
  • Restriction of birthright citizenship: Trump aims to end the practice of granting citizenship to babies born to illegal immigrants.
  • Enhanced scrutiny in visa applications: Trump envisions an expanded ideological screening process for visa applicants, subjecting them to heightened scrutiny based on their beliefs and views.

He also suggested a naval blockade by both the Coast Guard and the Navy to stop drug smuggling boats in U.S.-Latin American waters. Drug cartels would be designated as "unlawful enemy combatants," allowing U.S. military intervention in Mexico. Trump said he will also push for the completion of the border wall.

Biden campaign slams Trump's plans as "extreme" and "racist"

The Biden-Harris campaign swiftly denounced the proposed plans. "Mass detention camps, attempts to deny children born here citizenship, uprooting families with mass deportations — this is the horrifying reality that awaits the American people if Trump is allowed anywhere near the Oval Office again," said Ammar Moussa, spokesman for the campaign.
However, Biden is encountering increasing criticism of his immigration policies from within his party. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been consistently and explicitly condemning what he perceives as White House negligence in addressing a migrant crisis that has overwhelmed the Big Apple.
Immigration is emerging as a pivotal factor in shaping the perspectives of 2024 voters. According to Reuters/Ipsos polling, the percentage of Americans citing immigration as their top concern rose from 8 percent in September to 14 percent in October. In September, 54 percent of respondents agreed that "immigration is making life harder for native-born Americans."
