For the second time since the war broke out there, Chilean-American blogger Gonzalo Lira was arrested by Ukrainian authorities while trying to flee and enter Hungary for asylum.As you may recall, Lira was detained by Ukrainian intelligence back in May for allegedly harboring "pro-Russian sympathies." Now, he has been arrested by the same Ukrainian police state for attempting to make his way out of the war-torn country and into someplace safer.
Lira has been making waves by publishing videos to YouTube that are critical of the war – and more importantly, that are critical of the United States-Kiev-NATO stance that Russia is an aggressor rather than a liberator.
It remains to be seen, but Lira now faces a potentially very lengthy prison term that could include torture. We know this based on what surfaced following Lira's previous detention about how the Ukrainian government treats political detractors who do not support its side in the war.
As usual, the Biden regime is ignoring this blatant persecution of an American citizen, who under the U.S. Constitution is to be afforded full free speech rights under the First Amendment.
Sure, Lira is in Ukraine, not the U.S. But if the U.S. is going to send gobs of American taxpayer cash to Volodymr Zelensky while calling Ukraine a "democracy" that is aligned with U.S. interests, then it would only be right for Ukraine to respect Lira and other Americans' free speech rights.

Prior to his arrest, Lira had been posting videos explaining that he was attempting to flee Ukraine. He was due in a Ukrainian court this week, but basically skipped bail and attempted to escape in order to be granted asylum – you know, the same type of asylum that Hispanics from south of the border are trying to do as they enter the U.S. and receive free everything from the very same Biden regime that is doing nothing to help Lira.
According to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Lira is guilty of "producing and disseminating materials that justified the armed aggression" of Russia. Because of this, he is not to be allowed to be a free man, in the eyes of the rogue and authoritarian Ukrainian government, which apparently does not tolerate any kind of free speech that goes against its dictates.
Lira claims that the last time he was held by Ukrainian authorities, he was beaten and tortured. He was also extorted for his entire life savings, which amounts to around $100,000 when including the value of his confiscated computers and phones.
Lira's family members and supporters described the scenes from his first arrest and court hearing as a "kangaroo court." Remind us again why U.S. taxpayers are being extorted and forced to send their hard-earned tax dollars to welfare queen Zelensky?

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Ukraine tortured an American journalist to death and called out the government for failing to investigate what happened to him.The comments were made during a press briefing in St. Petersburg when Putin was asked about the killing of a French journalist in a missile strike. After saying he would facilitate an investigation, he took the opportunity to chide President Biden for his handling of the death of American journalist Gonzalo Lira.
Putin said: “They tortured an American journalist to death in a Ukrainian prison, and the U.S. is not even asking what happened to him. No one went to the trouble of asking what actually happened.”
Lira had been jailed since May of 2023 in Ukraine after being accused of justifying Russia’s military operations against Kiev. The dual American-Chilean citizen, who had moved to Ukraine in 2010, had a collapsed lung and pneumonia at the time of his death in a Kharkiv hospital. He had previously claimed he was tortured in prison by other inmates, which included beatings, sleep deprivation and other abuses.
Lira criticized Zelensky, Biden and Harris

The 55-year-old, who was born in California, had been a vocal critic of authoritarianism in Ukraine and believed the conflict there was a proxy war the U.S. was waging against Russia. He was arrested on charges of "production and dissemination of materials justifying Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine."
Tucker Carlson and Elon Musk were among those calling for him to be released. Posting on X after his death, Carlson wrote: "Gonzalo Lira was an American citizen, but the Biden administration clearly supported his imprisonment and torture. Several weeks ago we spoke to his father, who predicted his son would be killed."
Although the U.S. State Department confirmed his death, it did not release any information about his incarceration. His father said that he had been tortured by the Ukrainian government and said American officials “did nothing” to help him. He believes it may be because in addition to criticizing the Zelensky government, he also criticized Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

“I cannot accept the way my son has died. He was tortured, extorted, incommunicado for 8 months and 11 days and the US Embassy did nothing to help my son,” he said in an email, adding, “The responsibility of this tragedy is [with] the dictator Zelensky with the concurrence of a senile American President, Joe Biden. My pain is unbearable. The world must know what is going on in Ukraine with that inhuman dictator Zelensky.”
A handwritten letter by Lira to his sister, which is believed to be his final written correspondence, outlined the neglect he dealt with during his incarceration. He detailed severe edema and double pneumonia, which he said the prison ignored for two months. He added that the swelling in his lungs was so bad that he would pass out due to shortness of breath following “minimal activity, or even just talking for 2 minutes.”
According to Putin, more than 30 Russian journalists have been killed in the combat zone since the conflict began more than two years ago, and they haven’t been given the chance to investigate what happened to these individuals.

Billionaire Elon Musk, a close ally of US President Donald Trump, has blamed Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky for the death of an American national who criticized his government.
Chilean-American filmmaker and blogger Gonzalo Lira died in a Ukrainian jail in January 2024 while awaiting trial for “systematically justifying the Russian aggression.”
“Zelensky killed an American journalist!” Musk wrote on his social media platform X on Wednesday.
“Zelensky cannot claim to represent the will of the people of Ukraine unless he restores freedom of the press and stops canceling elections!” he added.
Lira, who moved to Ukraine in 2010, was covering the conflict with Russia on YouTube. The Security Service of Ukraine arrested him in 2023 after he jumped bail and attempted to seek asylum in Hungary. Lira claimed that he was tortured in custody. His family accused Kiev of being complicit in his death. The Ukrainian authorities denied any wrongdoing.

Lira’s father, Gonzalo Lira Sr., suggested in December 2023 that the Biden administration gave “at least tacit approval of Gonzalo’s arrest.”
Musk has attacked Zelensky in the middle of a public feud between the Ukrainian leader and Trump, which erupted when multiple Ukrainian and EU officials criticized the US president for launching direct negotiations with Russia without their approval.
Trump branded Zelensky a “dictator without elections” and claimed that he is deeply unpopular at home. Zelensky has suggested that the US president is trafficking in ‘Russian disinformation’.
Zelensky’s five-year presidential term expired in May 2024, and no new elections were called due to martial law. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that he no longer considers Zelensky a legitimate leader. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed recently that Moscow wants the issue of Zelensky’s legitimacy to be addressed during future peace talks.
