If a company condones this, they should be shut down. Unlike a commercial taxicab company which has tight control over its drivers, Uber just arranges a connection between customers and independent drivers. When you get in a vehicle, you should be delivered to your destination. It seems the Uber has no such guarantee.

But in all three of those examples, the company disciplines those "employees".

I wonder if any of those riders had to pay for the half ride they got?

Who said the company condones this? Did you actually read something I missed?

Of course folks in the three examples I provided would be disciplined and some probably fired. So where did we disagree on that?

If Uber works like a taxi company, you don't pay until you arrive at your destination.

I haven't gone looking for it. But I haven't seen them state a policy prohibiting this.

Uber drivers, as far as I understand, are independent contractors. They own their cars, not Uber. So Uber could terminate their contract with such drivers, but that is about all. So I don't agree with you that those three are the same as Uber.

I'd say it's a safe bet the company doesn't condone this. Every passenger is money in their pocket.

Right, they aren't the same, but the point I attempted to make is. Terminating a contract is the same as firing .... your association and work with the company has ended. Even as an independent contractor, you still must follow the rules.

But they should make that explicit to the drivers.

Similar, but not the same. Unless you have a tight contract, they can sever your relationship easily. But if you are an employee, especially if you are in a union, firing somebody is not that easy.

If you own the taxi and the employee is just a driver, you generally have much tighter control over them than if they are a contractor with their own car.

Tell everyone to switch from Uber to Lyft. Lyft is much better than Uber anyway.
