Governors: No Obamacare for Florida and Louisiana

In separate interviews, the governors of Florida and Louisiana said they would defy this week’s Supreme Court decision upholding the Affordable Care Act.

“We’re not going to implement Obamacare in Florida,” Florida Governor Rick Scott said Friday, according to The Tampa Bay Times. “We’re not going to expand Medicaid because we’re going to do the right thing. We’re not going to do the exchange.”

One day earlier, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal called the new health care plan, which requires states to set up a health insurance exchange plan by January 2014, a “blow to our freedoms,” as reported by ABC News.

“It really raises the question of what’s next, what’s allowable,” Jindal said. “Taxes on people who refuse to eat tofu or refuse to drive a Chevy Volt … this whole ruling I think is ridiculous. It’s a huge expansion of federal power.”

Scott said the Supreme Court ruling would be a “rallying call” for Republicans to work toward electing people who would repeal the law, while Jindal said he would wait and hope his party’s presumptive presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, would win the election.

“Elections have consequences. Elections do, in fact, matter,” Jindal said. “This one matters a lot.”
