Meat Prices Highest Since 1980s - and Still Rising

Meat Prices Highest Since 1980s - and Still Rising
    By HUGH COLLINS

The burger or bacon you put on your plate is likely at its most expensive since the 1980s, and it's only going to get pricier.

The surging price of corn futures - which allow farmers to lock in the price of the grain for an extended period - means few farmers are expanding their herds, Bloomberg News reported. Meat prices have risen 14% this year, driving up U.S. retail costs, and the rally is not over yet.

The U.S. cattle herd in July was the smallest since the 1970s, and the number of breeding hogs was the near the lowest on record. Corn futures, meanwhile, touched a two-year high.

"If grain prices go up, then meat prices are going to have to move up," Mark Greenwood, who oversees $1 billion in loans and leases to the hog industry for AgStar Financial Services Inc, told Bloomberg News. Corn costs "tempered any enthusiasm there was on expansion," he said.

Farmers often use corn as a feedstuff for animals.

Corn and wheat have risen by as much as 40% in the three months to September. Hot, wet weather hurt U.S. crops, while drought destroyed huge areas of crops in Russia and Europe.

This is just a manufactured scare tactic. And it makes me laugh that they say that meat is the highest since 1980. LOL!! Well yea....that was thirty years ago so of course meat is more expensive now than it was then. And even if you calculate it allowing for inflation, I bet it is still bs. They just like to pull numbers out of their hat and make claims for the purpose of scaring people. THERE IS NO SHORTAGE...

This is something that I know MORE than a little about

    Prices in meat always fluctuate

It depends on the cut , the company and the time of year

Pork is still dirt cheap depending where you shop
    Chicken prices are falling

Beef is going down a bit in middle meat cuts (chuck and round)

You can still eat dirt cheap if you shop your local adds

Learn how to plan 2 meals from 1
(Pork shoulder roast one night, leftovers enchiladas or pulled pork the next)

    Shop ,,,,, and be aware
Right now in my area a 3 lb bag of bone in chicken wings is $2 more than a 3 lb bag of boneless chicken tenders (best part of the breast)

SHOP THE ADS , USE THE COUPONS
    You can save a ton

Good information. Thanks. I especially like the 2 for 1 meals. I do that all the time. Just save some for the next meal and add rice or beans and veggies. You don't have to save much either. Just enough to have some meat in the meal. Soup is another great meal that can be made from left overs. Potato, veggies and meat from the night before. Add some bread and you have dinner. A good dinner too! If you dont want to eat the same meat twice in a row, then just freeze the left overs and have it in another meal a few days down the road.
