I don't know about you but the comment about their prayers being answered disguists me. People died in a horrific tragedy.

Haitians Begin Applying For Protected Status
MIAMI (CBS4) ―

Dozens of Haitian immigrants who call South Florida home gathered at the Notre Dame d' Haiti Catholic Church in Miami Monday morning with passports in hand and dreams of a brighter future in their hearts, thankful that their prayers had been answered.

"We are very thankful to America," said Roland Gerome the Obama administration granted temporary protective status to Haitians living in the U.S.

"The status allows Haitians who can prove that they were present in the US at the time the earthquake struck to accept lawful employment. This will allow them to send much need financial assistance to their loved ones in Haiti," said Randy McGrorty, director of Catholic Legal Services for the Archdiocese of Miami. "However, the process is complicated. Individuals should seek the assistance of attorneys and qualified agencies with experience and expertise in immigration matters to ensure timely processing and prevent fraud."

Monday morning a group of attorneys with the Catholic Legal Services invited anyone who needed an application, or needed help filling one out, to come to the church where trained staff members could assist them.

In order to be eligible for TPS McGrorty told CBS4's Marybel Rodriguez that an applicant must prove they were in the U.S. before the 7.0 earthquake rocked Port au Prince on January 12th. They must also be able to prove they are legal Haitian citizens, have two photos, a money order made out to the U.S. government and proof of hardship if they are not able to afford it. They must also have a clean criminal record to be eligible.

"This is some relief for the Haitian people, at least they could have something in hand and provide for those who are still alive," said Gina Celestine who is seeking TPS for her sister in law.

Help with the application process is also available at the CLS office, located at 150 SE 2nd Avenue, Suite 200, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
