Harlingen man sentenced to more than 5 years in prison

BROWNSVILLE - A Harlingen man who had pornographic videos and photos of children in his computer has been sentenced to more than five years in federal prison.

Samuel Jason Diaz, 37, was sentenced Monday by Judge Andrew Hanen to 63 months in federal prison without parole, to be followed by a lifetime of supervised release for receipt of child pornography.

He pleaded guilty to the offense in February, U.S. Attorney Don DeGabrielle said.

Diaz was purchasing and downloading videos and images containing child pornography from various websites, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents learned.

Diaz's computers contained more than 662 videos and more than 2,272 images of child pornography, federal officials said.

Diaz is on bond and will report to prison on Sept. 4, federal officials said.

Diaz is required to attend sex offender treatment and have a mental health evaluation while he is in prison, federal officials said.

After his release, Diaz will be required to register as a sex offender and attend sex offender counseling, including polygraph testing. He will banned from using Internet-cable computer devices and cannot be within 100 fee of parks, schools and other places where children congregate, officials said.
