Tell the PA House and Senate Not to Lease the PA Turnpike
Lame-duck Governor Ed Rendell is attempting to lease the Pennsylvania Turnpike for 75 years to a private foreign firm that will control the amounts charged for tolls, food and fuel on the Turnpike. Several years ago, Rendell attempted an outright sale of the Turnpike, but that was blocked by the Pennsylvania House and Senate after the voters expressed their strong opposition. Pennsylvania has already experienced the destructive results of outsourcing our jobs and leasing land and industries to foreign interests.
Private foreign investors will only be interested in maximizing their profits. They will not protect the interests of the taxpayers of Pennsylvania, which include over 2,500 hard-working Teamster members employed by the Turnpike who collect the tolls, maintain the road and generally serve to protect the traveling public. Any short-term financial gain for Pennsylvania under this lease proposal will be wiped out in a few years. After Rendell leaves office, Pennsylvania workers, employers and citizens will for decades be paying the price for this short-sighted and reckless plan.

You can help keep Pennsylvania's assets in American hands and protect our Teamster jobs by signing the below petition. The Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters will collect and present these petitions to the leaders of the Pennsylvania House and Senate to demonstrate your opposition to this lease proposal because it is not in the best interests of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

If a group of American investors feel that they value the future income of the Pennsylvania Turnpike highly they can always buy it back. The American canal and rail system was constructed with major amounts of foreign capital. Besides considering their history I would rather trust the foreigners than the Teamsters.
