A lot of these islands---the "coral atolls" ---are simply former coral reefs that became islands during periods of low sea level. The corals died off as they dried out but they started picking up vegetation from nearby landmasses. Sort of an eco-migration. The sea is always in a state of flux....so exactly what does the US have to do with it?
