High school shooting; police say gunman is dead

TROUTDALE, OR -CBS News reports there's been shooting at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, Oregon east of Portland. Multnomah County Sheriff's Office confirms the gunman is dead. There are also reports one teacher was injured.

Around 100 law enforcement responded to the active shooter at the school that has nearly 3,000 students. According to CBS affiliate KOIN, a LifeFlight helicopter landed in a nearby field along with at least 19 medical personnel.

Parents started arriving at school around 8:45 a.m., despite officers requesting they stay away for the moment.

One student told a parent the shooting began in the school's gymnasium, but that has yet to be confirmed through police.

TROUTDALE, Ore. -- A gunman shot and killed a student Tuesday at a high school in a quietColumbia River town in Oregon shortly after classes started and was found dead himself as police arrived, authorities said.

The attack panicked students at Reynolds High School in Troutdale after a lockdown was ordered and they were told to quietly go to their classrooms.

Freshman Morgan Rose, 15, said she hunkered down in a locker room with another student and two teachers.

"It was scary in the moment. Now knowing everything's OK I'm better," she said.

Freshman Daniel DeLong, 15, said after the shooting that he saw a physical education teacher at the school with a bloodied shirt.

"I'm a little shaken up," DeLong said. "I'm just worried."

He said he was texting friends to make sure they were all OK.

"It just, like, happened so fast, you know?" he said.

Troutdale police chief Scott Anderson said he was sorry for the family of the slain student, whose name was not immediately released. Police also did not identify the gunman or say how he died.

"Today is a very tragic day for the city of Troutdale," the chief said.
The first reports of shots fired came at 8 a.m. on the next-to-last-day of classes. Police initially seemed uncertain about whether there was a live shooter in the school.

Students were eventually led from the school with hands on their heads. Parents and students were reunited in a supermarket parking lot.

Mandy Johnson said her daughter called from a friend's phone.

"I thank God that she's safe," said Johnson, who has three younger children. "I don't want to send my kids to school anymore."

The Oregon violence came less than a week after a gunman opened fire on a college campus in neighboring Washington state, killing a 19-year-old man and wounding two others. It follows a string of mass shootings that have disturbed the nation, including one on Sunday in Nevada that left two Las Vegas police officers and a civilian dead.

The Tuesday shooting was the first fatal school shooting in Oregon since May 1998 when 15-yeatr-old Kip Kinkel killed two students and wounded 25 others at Thurston High School in Springfield near Eugene. He killed his parents prior to the attack and is serving an 111-year prison sentence.

Armor-clad gunman kills high school student during gym class

A lone teen gunman opened fire with a military-style rifle inside a suburban Oregon high school Tuesday morning, killing a student and wounding a teacher, officials said.

The shooter — who was wearing all-black clothing and body armor — committed suicide in a bathroom before police arrived at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, about 20 miles east of Portland, cops said.

Authorities say they used a robot with a camera to investigate and found the suspect slouched over a toilet. They have not yet identified the shooter, saying they were in the process of notifying relatives of both the shooter and the slain student.

Initial reports mistakenly said three shooters were involved.

Mary Rispler told The Oregonian newspaper that her brother-in-law, gym teacher Todd Rispler, was the injured educator.

She said relatives told her he would recover.

“It all just flooded in at once,” Rispler said.

“I feel like I’ve been punched in the stomach.”

Reynolds senior Annie Croll, 18, wasn’t at school because she finished classes last week, but said a friend watched as the shooter hunted down Rispler.“My friend saw the shooter with a gun chasing after him,” Croll told The Post.

A student was caught carrying a gun while the school was being evacuated, but Police Chief Scott Anderson it was unrelated to the shooting and the kid was in custody.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Department said cops responded to a call of shots fired at 8:07 a.m. West Coast time, KATU TV reported.

The dead shooter was armed with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and was dressed all in black, including a bullet-proof vest and helmet, KATU reported.

“This is a very tragic day. One that I had hoped that would never ever be part of my experience,” Superintendent Laura Florence said.

Parents told The Oregonian that the attack took place during a first-period gym class, with a student saying that shots were fired inside a locker room.

Students evacuated the school with their hands in the air, while frantic parents, some in pajamas, showed up at a nearby Safeway supermarket to search for their kids, the paper said.

Photos posted on Twitter show numerous police and fire vehicles outside the school, with a cop wearing body armor and a helmet climbing an armored truck.

President Barack Obama said Tuesday that his biggest frustration as president has been the country’s lack of change on gun laws.

“My biggest frustration so far is the fact that this society has not been willing to take some basic steps to keep guns out of the hands of people who can do just unbelievable damage,” he said during a Tumblr chat at the White House.

“We’re the only developed country on earth where this happens and it happens now once a week and it’s a one day story. There’s no place else like this,” he added.

Friends of the 14-year-old shot dead at an Oregon high school Tuesday turned to social media to express their sorrow, remembering the boy as an “amazing soccer player” and a “great friend.”

Heartbroken pals used the hashtag #RIPEmilioHoffman to swap memories about the Reynolds High School freshman who was killed when another teen opened fire in the boys’ locker room, killing Emilio Hoffman before turning the gun on himself, police said. A vigil was held for Hoffman Tuesday night.

“I love you so much and I always will. You were my first kiss and the first guy I truly loved,” @LyssaKarm wrote on Twitter.

Students at the Troutdale, Oregon, school tweeted their plan to wear green today in honor of Hoffman.

The 15-year-old freshman who opened fire on his Oregon high school Tuesday wanted to kill "sinners," the teen wrote in his diary.

Jared Padgett, an active member of an Gresham, Ore., Mormon church, shot and killed a student and injured a teacher during the attack on Reynolds High School before turning the gun on himself, police said.

While searching through the teen's home, officers found his journal, Portland's KGW reported.

In the diary, Padgett detailed plans to kill the "sinners" at his school, police said.

No specific students or teachers were named as targets. His writings did not outline how or when the killings would occur, police said.

Padgett was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Church elder Earl Milliron told the TV station that the 15-year-old was "highly regarded for his spirituality."

The teen, his brother and his father were all active in their Oregon church, Milliron said.

Milliron also said Padgett's parents' "tragic" divorce — which heavily affected the teen's dad — could have had an influence on the 15-year-old's mental health.

On Friday, the freshman's dad, Michael Padgett, released a statement to Oregon's FOX 12.

"We are finding it very difficult to put into words our state of mind and emotions," he wrote. "We are at a loss as to how and why this tragedy unfolded."

Freshman Emilio Hoffman was killed in the attack, police said.

He continued: "Our family does not condone and has never promoted violence or hatred toward anyone. The values that we have taught our children are love in Jesus Christ, compassion, forgiveness, and patience."

On Tuesday, Padgett brought a rifle, a handgun and a knife — all of which had been locked up in his family's home — to school, police said.

He allegedly gunned down 14-year-old Emilio Hoffman in the school's locker room and shot and injured a teacher.

Police found Padgett's body in a school restroom with a self-inflicted gunshot would, officers said.
