Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. on birth certificate?

On the Obama birth certificate posted on Obama's website:

Shouldn't it read "Barack Hussein Obama, junior"?

However, on the "birth certificate" on Obama's site, it says

    "Barack Hussein Obama II".

Maybe someone here who has the same exact name as his father can tell us if the proper term on an official birth certificate
is "Junior", or "jr." or "II", or maybe it could be either one of the 3 choices, depending on the state and the parents' wishes.

    Thanks.

I always thought that it is JR on the birth certificate and then when that JR has a kid with exactly the same name....then JR is now II and the kid is III

Our son has the same name as my husband and he is not a Jr. but II (as in "the second") and II is what is on his birth certificate and social security card.

Either Jr. or the numerical is proper. We chose to use the numerical because we prefered how it sounded We also wanted to avoid him being called Junior, J.R., Junie, etc. although we do occasionally....lovingly and jokingly......call him "Two".

This is mirse. The poster of the original message.

Thanks for your help in clarifying for me whether "junior" and/or "II" was legally acceptable on official birth certificates.

Would you mind telling us what state your son was born? Thanks.

    You're welcome Mirse.

Our son was born here in AZ.

Forgive me if I assume incorrectly, but are you wondering if use of Jr. or II is allowed depending on what state one lives in?

    Yes, something like that.

I think you answered my question: It seems that parents can choose to use either "junior" or "II" on their son's birth certificate, when the son is named after the father.

Did I answer your question? Thanks again for your help.

You did answer it And you're right...parents can choose what suffix they prefer no matter what state they live in.

If there were restrictions on suffix use, think about how many family names would be lost forever
