Seems like this poll was a little warped when it references 3rd party conservatives causing the loss for these candidates.

For example Conrad Burns (MT) was pals with Jack Abramoff and got tied up in having to defend against corruption charges.

Gordon Smith (OR) should have been running on the Democrat ticket as a moderate. Counting on him to not vote on any piece of legislation is a fools game. If he was going to be the firewall you are going to get burned.

Ted Stevens had all kinds of legal troubles leading up to the election. I do seem to recall that he was acquited of most if not all charges. Nonetheless, for a case to go to trial like his did it was a bad situation, one a public official should not have put themselves in.

The conservative 3rd party candidate did not cost these and likely the others mentioned to lose. Their poor judgment and lack of appealing campaigns did. Many of those voting for the 3rd candidate would not have voted if there would not have been someone available for them to vote for in good conscience. Of course if these three losers were truly concerned about closing the ranks and uniting behind an anti-socialist candidate then perhaps the thing for them to have done would have been to step aside and support the so called 3rd candidate.
