    Honorable Nancy Pelosi
Speaker of the House of Representatives
    The Capitol
    Washington, D.C. 20515

    Honorable Harry Reid
    Majority Leader
    United States Senate
    Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid,

We, the editors of HUMAN EVENTS, RedState.com and the many Americans who have attached their signatures to this petition, hereby request that you take the legislative steps necessary to insure that the Value Added Tax (VAT) not be imposed on the people of the United States of America this year or as long as you head Congress.

    We make this request because:

The American people have made it abundantly clear that they do not want to pay any additional taxes and were repeatedly promised by candidate Obama that no one earning less than $200,000 annually would be asked to pay any more taxes. A VAT, which would be paid by every citizen, would clearly break this promise.

Value Added Taxes will hurt small businesses and place an unacceptable burden on those living on fixed incomes, who will see their purchasing power drastically reduced.

The excessive spending that we are seeing under this Administration and this Congress should be addressed not by greater taxation, but by curtailed outlays.

America already has a punishing income tax, Social Security taxes, Medicare taxes, sales taxes, state taxes, etc., and the addition of yet another, even more onerous tax would be ruinous.

Europe’s experience demonstrates that a VAT causes an increase in the size of government. America does not need more government, it needs less. A new Pew Research poll said that just 22% of the American people say they can trust the federal government in Washington.

A Value Added Tax would devastate families and businesses, would kill jobs and truncate any economic recovery that may be occurring.

We cannot acquire more revenue at the expense of the American people. We need more fiscal responsibility on the part of this Congress and this Administration.

For these reasons and many more, Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid, we strongly request that, for the benefit of the American people, you take the necessary legislative steps to make sure that the American people are not subjected to an economically disastrous Value Added Tax.

    Respectfully submitted,
