IA-Woman finds SSN already used to open account

Woman finds SSN already used to open account
    THE REGISTER • May 8, 2008

A Des Moines woman tried to open a bank account Wednesday but discovered someone beat her to it.

Myra Hagler, 25, told police that when she tried to open a bank account she discovered that someone in Berwyn, Ill., was using her Social Security Number.

Police have a name for that person, but no confirmation of the person's real name.

    No arrests were immediately reported.

Investigators do not know how the Illinois resident got Hagler's Social Security Number, but the case will be sent to detectives for further review.

A recent Federal Trade Commission survey estimated more than 8 million adults in the US were victims of identity theft in 2005, and the problem caused losses of $50 billion.
