The key thing to know about Clint Eastwood’s surrealistic turn at the RNC Thursday was that five minutes of it were scripted and the rest….well…those of you who watch political conventions after drinking large amounts of cough syrup can explain it to everybody else. Somewhere, the Demon Sheep is smiling.
The improv from the San Francisco native, Oakland Tech grad, former Carmel Mayor and Oscar winner was that he was talking to President Obama, symbolized by an empty chair.
And…..go:




As former Romney and Meg Whitman adviser Mike Murphy tweeted: “Note to file: Actors need a script.”
For raw entertainment value, it was absolutely marvelous, unscripted moment after watching three days of a political infomercial. Even without drinking a bottle of cough syrup.
Politically, what makes NO SENSE is why the Romney campaign — which clings to their scripted talking points tighter than just about any campaign ever — would allow the 82-year-old Eastwood to ADLIB for seven minutes with an empty chair in the last hour of the most important hour of the convention in a supertight presidential race.
One question: Mitt who?
Then again, the RNC did start a major Internet storm.
Twitter EXPLODED afterwards. @InvisibleObama had 30,000-plus followers within an hour. Buzzfeed is compiling the best, including this from @davidharsanyi: “eastwood representing libertarians around the country: pro freedom. anti war. and, more than likely, baked.”
Comedian and award-winning comedy writer David Feldman said: “What you democrats don’t realize is Clint Eastwood is one the world’s leading jazz benefactors and tonight’s speech was a tribute to Charlie Parker’s heroin addiction.”
The Romney camp, smelling an “Ishtar” on their hands, quickly — and diplomatically — backed away from Eastwood’s..uh…”performance” afterwards. Said a campaign spokesperson: “Judging an American icon like Clint Eastwood through a typical political lens doesn’t work. His ad libbing was a break from all the political speeches, and the crowd enjoyed it.”
The Obama campaign quickly responded the Eastwood’s critique through Twitter.

I really enjoyed that skit!!! Of course the left didn't they are squealing all over the news channels. Of course the "make my day" thing was cute but I prefer the one where he says "do Ya Punk"!!!

Just watched it for the first time. I saw Mitt's speech - but not Clint's. This was like throwing the rabid left a chew toy (as stated by Roger Hedgecock) and it was hilarious. Glad this got their hackles up. Clint knew EXACTLY what he was doing.

If I had the choice I'd vote Eastwood.
